You maybe correct, the pawl spring (one of them) may be broken or contaminated with gunge. Before delving in too deep, make sure the selector is free and lubricated. Sorry to say, removal of the chain case and then remove the clutch assembly, primary chain and then after removing the final drive to the main drive chain, remove the gearbox. Replace the pawls and springs.

Yes, I'm very surprized that you can shift the gears. Without the belt to hold the main drive gear still, sometimes the transmission can be tough to shift.
I wouldn't worry about anything in the transmission at this point. Just get the new belt on and then see how the tranny shifts.
The neutral indicator switch is mounted in the right-hand crankcase directly forward of the main drive gear shaft and behind the forward belt pulley.
To access the switch, you must remove the front belt pulley cover. To get to the switch itself, you'll have to loosen the final drive belt and remove the pulley.
Disconnect the wire from the neutral switch. Turn the ignition on and ground the wire. The Neutral indicator light should light up. If not, you have an electrical problem between the neutral switch and the indicator light. If the light works like it should but will not work when on the switch, you need to replace the neutral indicator switch.
Simply screw the old switch out and install a new one.
Sounds like you've broken a final drive belt. Look at the pulley on the rear wheel and see if the large final drive belt is there. Don't laugh, I've seen it before. When the final drive belt breaks, it simply runs itself out on the road and the rider never knows it until he stops somewhere. When he tries to take off, the bike won't go anywhere. The speed sensor is magnetic and attracts metal shavings in the transmission fluid, witch build up and block the signal. Try cleaning it. It's located on the top of the transmission below the starter. remove it and wipe the metal off the end, and replace it.
