Need do know the spark plugs gap

If you're replacing the spark plugs in your car engine, you'll need to set the gap before reseating the spark plug. The gap is the distance electricity arcs between the ground electrode and center electrode. The gap must be set correctly to ensure maximum performance. Here's how to set the gap of a spark plug.

  1. Remove the spark plug wires. Use a socket wrench to remove the spark plugs from their chambers.
  2. Clean the spark plug if you are not replacing it with a new one. Remove all dirt and debris from the spark plug.
  3. Check the owner's manual for your car (or any appliance with spark plugs) to find out the recommended gap setting.
  4. Use a gap tool to check the gap of the spark plug. Slip the tool between the ground electrode and center electrode. The gap tool should fit snugly at the recommended gap width indicated on the tool.
  5. Push the tool between the electrodes a few times to ensure proper gap. If the gap is too wide, push the ground electrode firmly against a flat surface to narrow the gap and then check again with the gap tool.
  6. Repeat Step 5 as necessary until you reach the correct gap. Reseat the spark plug and reattach the spark plug wires

Spark Plug Gap

like on all my cars and my bike i always ask what the gap is and they tell me but they say that they come pre-gapped from the factory so as long as your careful with them, just put them in..but i still line them all up and check to see that they are all the same gap before i put them in, and in my cars and my bike i"ve never had a problem...now when checking gaps on old plugs yes im always checking the gap and i use .032..and i get a wire brush and clean them up a bit too.

Got a 2005 YZF-R1 and cant afford to pay a garage to change spark plugs so how can I do this at home?

I have never worked on a YZF, but if they are like most motorcycles I would start by taking the seat off. This should expose the center bolt on the rear of the tank that holds your gas tank on. Undo that bolt. The tank may swivel up on a pivot and lock into place or you may have to pull it backwards and up. On some bikes there are also two bolts holding the front of the tank on. one you figure that part out close your fuel petcock off if you have one and disconnect you fuel lines and any electrical lines hooked to the tank. You can do this before you unbolt the tank, but usually its easier with the tank unbolted so you can move it around to get access to things.

Once the tank is off you should be able to access your spark plugs by taking off the plug wires. Use a long extension and a very thing socket (you may have to buy one designed for motorcycles). If you use a regular spark plug socket you would use on a car you run the risk of getting it jammed in the head because it may be too think to clear the hole where the plug is at. Once you have your old plugs removed inspect them for proper combustion (they should look tan). When you put your new plugs in if they are not pre gapped gap them to the proper setting (ask the dealer when you buy them for proper gap, they will tell you if they are pregapped). Make sure you thread the spark plug by hand using the socket and extension only, dont use the rachet to start them as it is easy to cross thread the spark plug hole. It will be a bad day if you do that. Keep in mind that most new vehicles are equipped with iridium spark plugs which are rated for 100000 miles before they need to be replaced. I would check to see if thats what you have before spending the time and money replacing them as you may not need them.
