All depends how old. The 70's and 80's models slid out of the case. If this is what you have, take the front off and slide the unit out of the case. If it had screws to take out, they would be around the bottom of the unit.
The 2-stage unit will give you better variable efficiency under differing temperature conditions than a single-stage would. If I had to choose I would pick the Fedders unit, between the 2 you listed. (I install HVAC components for a living...)
mcdevito75 here, Are you sure your A/C unit is designed to both give heat and A/C ?? I figure the A/C of the unit works well, just doesn't give heat, if so see your local A/C repair shop in your area, they come to the house.

I had a service man come out and he said the compressor was not coming on so he installed a hard start in parallel with capacitor solving the problem and is working normal now.
