I accidently put two stroke gas in the fuel tank and ran it a few seconds, then it quit. Drained the fuel and added new fuel, but will only run a few seconds?

  • impalass42 Dec 20, 2009

Thank you for your answer! I am sorry I didn't specify what it was. It's a Honda Snow Thrower, mice had made a nest in the large cavity under the plastic shroud. By the time I cleaned that out I was pretty pissed off, and it was getting darker, I grabbed the wrong can and topped it off. I should've just then emptied the fuel tank but was in too much of a hurry. That'll teach me...

I'll disassemble it and do as you suggested, thanks again!!

Snow blower 1 year old, was using it ran out of gas , put in new gas, went to start, it ran for few seconds then dies,, prime it it runs few seconds dies, has NEW gas ans new plug, only runs for seconds...

If it has a fuel filter on it change it and that should get you going again. If not the dirt that was in the tank is prob in the carb cleaning the fuel bowl and jets should get you up to par. Hope that helps

Ran out of gas and wont start

Sounds like a typical case of letting the car run dry out of fuel, you may want to try spraying starter fluid into the intake/air filter after allowing the key to be left on in the run position for a few seconds, this allows the fuel pump to fill the fuel lines with fuel, then try spraying a shot of start fliud if still no start you may have a more serious problem....fuel contamination...the bottom of the fuel tank may have sediment in it and when you let it go dry it pulled up the bad stuff and now it needs to be flushed.
New fuel filter, injector service, fuel tank drained/flushed and fuel lines drained.

Have a snapper mower.son put 2 cycle mixed fuel in it and ran it for about 5 minutes. Now wont start. Drained and replaced fuel and changed plug. What next?

the gas sitting in the carb is "still" 2-stroke...there's a bolt on the bottom of the carb...DON"T remove it, just loosen it til the gas leaks out (about 30 seconds or so)...that is letting the 2-stroke gas out and letting in the right gas...make sure the bolt is snug..NOT TIGHT...and giver a few pulls...no choking is needed since it's already flooded from pulling on it...it'll smoke a bit and run a little rough, until it burns the oil mix residue out of the muffler...Now get a Sharpie & mark the cans... 8^)

Wont start after 6 mos. I changed the spark plug, drained & added fresh gas, checked the fuel filter... Kicks over fine. Ran for 4 seconds, then it died. Always ran & started great before.

With a new plug and fresh gas it should start. Check to make sure there isn't a kill switch turned off or that the gas petcock from the tank to the carb is on.

How did you check the fuel filter? Disconnecting it from the fuel line that goes to the carb is the best way, making sure the gas is turned on under the tank. Bleed off a little gas into a can or something just to make sure the filter isn't plugged.

The last thing I'd do is take off the air filter and spray a little starting fluid in the carb. It may start and run several times if there is old gas in there somewhere. Remember the bowl on the carb is probably still full of old gas. After some fresh fuel reaches the plug it should start and continue to run.

(You might drain the bowl on the carb of ols gas before you go any further)

Good luck!

Lawn mower engine runs rough and puts out white smoke

Pull the carburetor and clean it for staters.Be sure to change oil any little bit of moisture in the crankcase will let it smoke white by seeping by the valves and piston rings. Also put a little small amount of dry gas in the gas tank to rid all of the water that may have been left in the tank. I some of this will help you.

Oil

even mixing at 32:1 looks like straight gas. Not cloudy at all. I understand that it is a beige color but it is undetectable by sight in the gas. After a tear in the fuel line coming out of the carb I noticed this and immediately drained the gas tank figuring that there was an error. But made a new batch and the same thing happened. Has anyone else had this this problem or have noticed this?No worries, a lot of new low-smoke and synthetic 2 stroke oil is not readily detectable in the gas. If you want something that is easy to see in the gas try something with color added. Kawasaki makes a blended racing oil that has a dark green color added and is easily seen in the gas. I used to use it but switched to a full synthetic. I now use Castrol and it is undetectable once you mix it in the gas. Trust me, if you ran plain gas you would know it very, very soon!,,,

Wrong gas

Since it's not running right I'm assuming the lawn mower is a 2-stroke and the gas had pre-mix in it. It probably just got a strong mix of the pre-mix in the lines and just has to be cleared out. We run some of the old pre-mixed gas from our dirt bikes in our trucks to get rid of it. I put a gallon or so per tank refill of good gas. You may try and rev it up a bit when starting to keep it going long enough to flush it out with the new gas you put in, that or start it a few times till it's clean. An octane booster or fuel injector cleaner might help also. If the lawn mower gas wasn't pre-mix it may just be old and possibly have some water in it.
