No light behind the heating and air conditioning controls

My son just bought a 2001 Passat. It's dark out and he discovered there is no light behind the heating/air conditioning controls. Could it be a fuse?

Is it a manual or auto climate system ?? I don"t remember the auto deal but..... if manual- set the fan speed to #2 position and pull the knob straight off. It might put up a fight and you might have to use both hands... no joke. When the knob is off you'll see the little bugger, it might have simply fell outta the socket

Sunroof drains are a common problem on many models. Cleaning or modifying the sunroof drains usually takes care of the problem. You may resolve your problem. I believe that the trouble codes are unrelated and may need professional diagnosis as you need VAGCOM to adapt the throttle.

2001 Passat check engine light flashing and car shuts off will not start

The first step is to plug in an OBD-2 scanner to read exactly what the fault code is, that is setting off the check engine light (CEL). If you are in the USA, most auto parts stores like AutoZone, Oreillys, or Advance Auto Parts have these OBD-2 scanners and will check for vehicle fault codes at no cost (free).
Since the problem seems to arise when the check engine light comes on, it is likely the code will show the exact malfunctioning part, or an area to focus on.
Without knowing the exact error/fault code, it's impossible to say what the exact problem is, that's causing the car's shutdown.

I OWN A VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT, JUST BOUGHT IT NOW THE HEAT BOLWS OUT COLD AIR WHAT SHOULD i CHECK OR DO

Check operation of the heater coolant on/off control valve and operating mechanism.
Check thermostat is installed and working OK - replace if in doubt.
Check if coolant heater supply hoses are warm/hot when coolant valve on.
If hoses are cold (no coolant flow evident) check coolant system is properly filled (bleed system as necessary to remove possible air locks).
If still no coolant flow check heater system for blockage.
If all above ok, check heater unit air control vanes operation.

My heat not workini but blow cold air where is

Has the car been changed coolant since it was bought? If it is time to change, let do a flush through a heater core. There are 2 coolant hoses going thru a fire wall. One for coolant in and one for coolant out. Heater only works if coolant is flowing through the heater core. Therefore, there are one or both following cases contributes to the problem: 1-If the valve control coolant flow gets stuck, then it always closes  so there is no heat. 2-If the valve is working, but the heater core gets clogged up, then there is no heat.

Air conditioning/heat/defroster controls do not work

I think u r right. this is a problem that most certainly requires a skilled technician to solve If u dont know of anyone who is good at this problem that leaves only the dealer and of course they are going to sockit to you. get an estimate.. it might be a good idea to check all your fuses first. then look under the hood for any loose vacum lines. dont forget your fuses under the hood usually in a plastic box.
