Question about 2002 Honda CR 250 R

On lowering a cr250 1996. on the threds at the rear mono shock if you spin the nut ring things that hold the shock up it will lower it right not make it higher?

Right. If you spin this adjuster so that tension on the shock spring is reduced, the height of your bike will also be reduced (at the expense of having less suspension travel remaining, making it easier to bottom out because of less spring pre-load).

If you want to lower the seat height you can look on e bay for a lowering link it should lower the bike about a 1.5 inch. it will also ride smother because you alow the shock to travel more. it worked on my 2002 cr anyway. but they cost around 100 bucks

Removal & Installation

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Support the rear axle and slightly lower the vehicle enough to lessen tension on the shock absorber.
  3. Remove the lower shock absorber retaining nut and washer.
  4. Disconnect the lower end of the shock absorber from the mounting stud.
  5. Remove the shock absorber upper end retaining nut and washer.
  6. Remove the shock absorber from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Install the shock absorber onto the upper and lower mounting studs of the vehicle.
  2. Install the washers and retaining nuts. Tighten the upper and lower retaining nuts to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-41 Nm) on 2001-02 models or 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) for the upper bolts and 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm) on the lower bolts.
  3. Lower the vehicle.

Rear shock absorber installation


Loosen and remove the upper nut and bolt. Compress the shock and wiggle it off the lower stud. Slide the new shock into place and tighten the lower nut. Pop the top of the shock into place and bolt the upper bolt through the holes the same way you removed it. Tighten the nus and bolt in the same point they were when you removed them. Then lower the car to the ground and you are done.lightdeal

Need a picture of how its done im trying to install the longer rod for lowering the ride hight


Evidently, you are trying to lower a Softail bike. You must raise the bike so you can get at the shocks underneath. But, you must also block the rear wheel up so it doesn't fall when you disconnect the shocks.

Once you get the bike litke this, loosen the lock nuts towards the rear wheel. With those loose, take the bolts out that hold the pivot rods to the rear swing arm. Now, turn the adjuster nut so that the pivot rods are coming out of the adjuster nut. Once completely out, start your new longer rods back in the adjuster nuts. Don't forget to take the lock nut off the original pivot rods and put them on the new ones before you put them in the adjuster nuts. Do both shocks the same way. Adjust the rods to the same length and bolt them back to the swing arm. If the won't go, you may have to raise or lower the rear wheel so that the bolt holes line up with the pivot rods. Reinstall the bolts that hold the pivot rods to the swingarm and lock the lock nuts down. Your bike should be lowered at this point. If it's not like you want it, you'll have to adjust the shocks with the adjuster bolt.

Keep in mind that on the Softail, if you lower the bike too much, the top of the final drive belt may rub the underside of the inner primary cover underneath the starter and make a noise. If you hear a whining noise, this is probably what it is. Watch for that.

Need new struts on rear, Would like to replace with air shocks. Any suggestions on how I would do this?


Shock Absorber -The rear already has air shocks on the 1999 Cadillac Deville: REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Rear
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Rear wheel Fig. 1: Exploded view of the rear shock absorber mounting 9300vg06.gif

    • Negative battery cable
    • Shock absorber electrical connector from the rear suspension support, If equipped
  3. Support the lower control arm with a jack to relieve the tension on the shock absorber.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Lower shock absorber mounting bolt and nut
    • Upper mounting nut, retainer, and insulator
    • Shock absorber compress by hand and remove through the upper control arm
    To install:
  5. Position the top of the shock absorber with the insulator attached into the suspension support.
  6. Install or connect the following:
    • Upper shock insulator, retainer and nut. Torque the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
    • Shock absorber lower mounting nut/bolt. Torque the nut to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
    • Shock absorber electrical connector to the rear suspension support, if equipped
    • Rear wheel
    • Negative battery cable

Instructions for replacing shocks & struts


Ok first off if the vehicle is equipped with air ride you need to turn the air ride off or you will blow out the rear bags when the rear is off the ground.

For the front Remove the wheel. Take off the upper shock nut. Now remover the two lower retaining nuts. Compress the shock and pull it out. Install in reverse order. Before installing the new shock push the piston completely down and allow it to return. Do this 2 to 3 times.

For the rear remove the wheel support the rear end with jack stands at the jack points. Now use your jack (not a scissor jack) and place it under the rear diff to support the rear diff. If you have another set of jack stands use them and support the rear axle as it sits.

Remove the lower shock bolt. Now remove the two upper shock bolts and the shock will come right out.

How do I replace the struts and shocks


well the rear are easy take the wheel off,,,put a jack under the rear axle on the side you are doing and put tension on the jack to jack it up alittle,remove the 21mm lower shock bolt and the 18mm top shock bolt and release the jack,then remove shock and reinstall new,,,they are easy do the same fo rthe other side and then go to the front,,,take off wheel,,, no jacking up required for front struts,,,remove the two 18mm nuts and bolts that connect the strut to hub and then 18mm nut the holds the sway bar end link to strut,,may may need a vise grip on the back side of the end link to hold it from spinning as they rust fast,then open the hood and hold the strut with one hand thru the wheel well and take the top strut mount nut off under the hood 18mm,watch because the strut will fall in the wheel well so hold it,i would advise using a air gun to do this all other wise youre gonna have a hard time to remove the sway bar end link nuts

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Spring Rear
Removal
  1. Position a hoist under the rear axle housing, and raise the vehicle. Refer to Section 00-02 . Place jackstands under frame side rails.
  1. Remove rear stabilizer bar as outlined.
  1. Disconnect the lower studs of the two shock absorbers from the mounting brackets on the rear axle assembly .
  1. Unsnap the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit (2A635) from RH upper arm retainer before lowering the rear axle assembly .
  1. Lower the hoist and axle housing until the rear springs are released.
  1. Remove rear spring and rear spring center mounting insulators (5741) from vehicle.

Shock Absorber Removal
Raise the vehicle on a hoist. 1. To assist in removing the upper attachment on shock absorbers using a plastic dust tube, place an open end wrench on the hex stamped into the dust tube's metal cap. For shock absorbers with a steel dust tube, simply grasp the tube to prevent stud rotation when loosening the retaining nut.
  1. Remove the shock absorber retaining nut, washer, and insulator assembly from the stud on the upper side of the frame. Discard nut. Compress the shock absorber to clear the hole in the frame, and remove the inner insulator and washer from the upper retaining stud.
  2. Remove the self-locking retaining nut, and disconnect the shock absorber lower stud from the mounting bracket on the rear axle tube.
  3. Perform Shock Absorber Checks. Refer to Section 04-00 to determine shock absorbers performance.
Installation
  1. Properly prime the new shock absorber . Refer to Section 04-00 , Shock Absorber Checks.
  1. Place the inner washer and rear spring insulator (5536) on the upper retaining stud, and position the shock absorber so that the upper retaining stud enters the hole in the frame. While holding the shock absorber in this position, install a new rear spring insulator , washer and nut assembly on the upper side of the upper frame. Be sure to seat the rear spring insulator in the frame attaching hole. Tighten nut to 34-46 Nm (25-34 lb-ft).
  1. Extend the shock absorber , and place the lower stud in the mounting bracket hole on the rear axle assembly housing. Install a new self-locking retaining nut. Tighten nut to 76.5-103.5 Nm (56-76 lb-ft).
  1. Lower vehicle.

Refer to the illustration in Description and Operation. NOTE: To improve rear axle assembly noise and vibration concerns, the rear suspension should be fastened to the frame and rear axle assembly at the curb height position.
NOTE: If one rear suspension lower arm requires replacement, also replace the opposite rear suspension lower arm .

  1. Remove rear stabilizer bar as outlined.
  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist, and place jackstands under the rear axle assembly . Refer to Section 00-02 .
  1. Lower the hoist until the shock absorbers are fully extended to relieve rear spring pressure.
  1. Support rear axle assembly under differential pinion nose as well as under rear axle assembly .
  1. Remove and discard the lower arm pivot bolt and nut from the axle bracket. Then, disengage the rear suspension lower arm from the bracket.
  1. Remove and discard the pivot bolt and nut from the frame bracket, and remove the rear suspension lower arm .

  4. Unsnap parking brake rear cable and conduit from upper arm retainer.
  5. Remove and discard the nut and bolt retaining the rear suspension arm and bushing to the rear axle assembly housing. Disconnect the rear suspension arm and bushing from the housing.
  6. Remove and discard the nut and bolt that secures the rear suspension arm and bushing to the frame bracket, and remove the rear suspension arm and bushing . If upper arm rear bushing is to be replaced, use Suspension Bushing Service Set T79P-5638-A and Rear Axle Control Arm Bushing Tools T86P-5638-AH and the following procedure:
  7. Place the upper arm rear bushing remover tool in position, and pull bushing out. Using Suspension Bushing Service Set T79P-5638-A install bushing assembly into bushing ear of rear axle assembly.
