Check battery voltage with car off. Start car, check voltage again. Have a helper rev the engine slightly (hold RMP's around 2000). If low with car running as well (less than 12v) suspect bad alternator.

I have a 97 chevy blazer that is losing power, backfiring and killing battery

Replace your alternator its loose power and backfiring because you dont have enough voltage/amperage to run the pcm ignition module and fuel pump. At least thats a best guess with what little info I have to work with

Driving along lights dimmed, instrument panel died, loss of power then engine cut out & wouldn't start. Starts with a jump but when i turn key to heat glow plug, instrument panel goes mad

I assume there's a problem with alternator. Check the grounding to engine, check continuity of a positive wire between alternator and battery. the energizing voltage should be checked as well. Might be the bad connection between battery and vehicle body grounding. Diesel cars are sensitive even in a little loss of connection and rust in the connection points.

Well, check the connection to the starter, and see if it is loose. If it isn't, I think you need an alternator. That's what makes the light come on. If it is loose, tighten it, and your problem should be solved.

While driving car looses power and will die.unable to start .turning ignition on,no lights to instrument panel and radio, horn or lights.

The alternator is not charging ,replace it,and charge the battery back up with a low 2 amp charger to get a good deep charge.

Several possibilities: fuel filter may be plugged, fuel pump may be going bad and under-pumping. Ignition system may have a problem, or charging system may not be putting out enough voltage to power the ignition system (but usually accompanied by no start /low battery condition) If dash warning light comes on when this happens, have a code check done (most large parts houses do this free) Also have charging system tested. From what you said though I'm leaning towards the filter or pump as the cause of your problem.
