The cam chains have developed slack and are slapping on the cam chain guides which helps prevent the cam chains from popping off in case of slack developing . The chain guides are made of some type of plastic material and develop significant wear.
I have a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe and I have replaced the timing belt, tensioner, idler, and water pump and the noise is still there. The next step is to look into the lifters from what I have found if the oil has not been maintained it breaks down and causes deposits and they will plug the oil ports in the heads causing lifters to fail.So I will be diving into it this weekend and post the results so everyone knows what steps to take to have the noise corrected.
I agree with Silver Top. The noise is quite likely due to worn valvetrain components including the valves and valve tappets. You might consider having your engine flushed and your timing belt and tensioner changed. In the US we recommend the timing belt be changed every 5 years or 60,000 miles. You are likely well beyond that and if it hasn't been done it should now be your first priority.
Also, an engine flush may help cure the problem. If you haven't been very particular about your oil changes being done every 3 months or 3000 miles (whichever comes first!), or if the vehicle is higher than 75,000 miles then it's likely that deposits have formed which may contribute to both excessive wear on the valvetrain components and/or an occlusion of oil passages in the cylinder heads. If that's the case then a proper engine oil flush will help resolve this to a degree.
When you take your vehicle for a timing belt, go to a Hyundai dealer and mention the noise and ask for a proper diagnosis. Also, ask that the timing belt tensioner be replaced with the belt. This isn't normally done at every dealer so you should be sure to ask specifically that it be done.
Good luck.

hi from uk considering age of vehicle and possible high milage ?? this ticking if it has got progressivly louder ? it may be one or more valve tappets that are failing ? or possibly timing belt tensioner? either way valves may/will be affected ? for info as you do not mention engine and litre the cambelt and tensioner should be replaced as a kit at 50,000 mls or 5 years also it is advised a check on belt/tensioner at 30.000 mls for 2.4 ltr engine if you have not carried thisservice? then may i suggest you do asap or risk serious /expensive damage as result of belt failure ? visit your local garage and have them check noise out? also cost of belt/+tensioner renewal ? it is not too difficult to diy with instruction please come back with any more info as to progress best wishes n/west uk
Can you find out where around the engine it's coming from. First look at your exhaust. The gaskets might be getting old. Really, it could be a ton of stuff, try to narrow it down and let us know. Also, is it only when you are moving or does it happen in park idling too.
