Question about 2003 Harley Davidson XL 1200 C Sportster Custom

1 Answer

Every winter I have an issue taking the battery out of an 03 sportster (xlh). Seat comes off fine, get the terminals unattached ok, but cant lift the darn thing up! The manual makes it look like an easy lift up and out, What am I doing wrong, any suggestions that may make this easier?

Usually, if you tip the top of the battery forward you can lift the bottom of the battery up and over the lip of the battery box. But, some batteries are a bit taller than others by just a fraction of an inch or a few millimeters. This can sometimes cause difficulty.

How can i jump start my vmax ? i cant seem to get the seat out!

taking the seat of a vmax is really easy. open the seat like your gonna full the gas tank, on both sides is a plastic piece coming from the seat. on nut on each side comes out and the seat lifts back and up. if your talking about just starting with a battery cable you can just reach the battery cables with the seat off. if your talking about jump starting by forward motioin and using the clutch its best to find a hill and get it going and put the bike in 2nd gear and let the clutch out. WARNING. If the bike don`t start you probably won`t be able to push it up hills, it weighs 650 lbs. but you can not jump start the bike without taking off the seat. suggestion, buy a battery tender terminal hookup for $5 and screw the two wires onto your batter and let if hang out the side of the seat, it has a cap over to keep it dry in the rain and if you buy a battery tender you will be able to jump the bike or charge the battery without taking of the seat every time. the battery tender cost from $20 to $40 it s worth the money. if your not going to ride you bike in the winter hook up the battery tender and leave the battery out of the bike for the winter in a garage or basement hooked to the battery tender. cost pennys a month and save the battery life.
hope this helps

Remove 1995 sportster seat

Providing that it is a stock seat, remove the screw at the back of the seat, (in the center of the fender), lift the rear of the seat and pull the seat towards the rear of the bike.

Greeting ... I have a 833 sporter xl 2005, how can I remove the battery to send to check it

To get your battery out, first remove the seat. Usually, remove the bolt at the rear of the seat, lift the rear end upwards and pull backwards. Once the seat it off, there is a chrome strap across the top of the battery cover. On the right hand side, there is a nut on the end of the strap. Loosen this nut until the strap will come off the battery. Remove the negative side battery cable first but accessing the bolt from the right side of the bike. Then, remove the positive side. Take it to an automotive parts house and have them check the battery for you.

Remove the battery from a hugger 883 2003

Harley has made a few changes but basically the removal of the battery is pretty much the same as it has been for a long time.

Remove the seat first, one bolt at the rear, lift and pull to the rear. Next, there's a strap that holds the battery top cover on. Take the strap loose and remove the top and side covers. Now, on some later models, there is another strap that holds the battery in. Remove it as well. Disconnect the cables from the terminals. The negative should be disconnected first. Sometimes it's not the easiest to get to but with the proper tools it can be done. Remove the positive cable last when taking the battery out. When reinstalling the battery, always connect the postive first, negative last. Safety first. Good Luck.

Dead battery and I don't know how to get it out to take it for a charge at a shop? I'm a newbee on my harley

According to the website here, you have a Sportster. To get the battery, first take the seat off. There's only one bolt at the very back of the seat that you need to take out to get the seat off. Remove the bolt, lift up on the rear of the seat and pull to the rear. seat is off.

Now, down by the battery, there is a strap that runs across the top of the battery cover. It is tightened by a nut on the right side of the battery. Loosen the nut until you can take the strap off. Remove the top and side cover off the battery. Disconnect the negative side of the battery first. You need either a long screwdriver or an extension with a 10 mm socket on it. Take the bolt out of the negative connector from the right hand side of the bike. Then use a 10mm wrench to remove the bolt from the positive side. Lift the battery out of the tray.

Now, you can recharge the battery yourself but I'd advise taking it to an automotive parts house and have it checked. They'll charge it and load test the battery. When you reinstall the battery in your bike, connect the positive terminal first and the negative terminal last. The rest you put together in reverse order. Good Luck!
