There is a nyliner ( nylon bushing) around the pin on the pivot of the lever. start by replacing that- it is very inexpensive and easy to replace. while you have the lever off check the brake switch for proper function- it should switch on and off easily with just a simple push and release of a small screwdriver or punch.

Rear brake lever sticking making my brek lights stay on

Hi, There should be a spring that pulls the lever back up when you remove your foot. It might be missing or broken. You might also have a mal adjusted switch that activates the brake light. it should be located near the pivot bolt for the brake lever. There is also a switch on the front brake lever. That might need adjusting or replacement.

Brake Light Switch Problems

Several front disc brake model bikes have a release button type switch snuggly mounted under the lever bracket, offering no adjustment. When levers wear a little and start to slop at idle, the brake light can often flicker in unison or remain on as the stopper bar is out of alignment to the tiny button head. To stop this problem without having to source a new lever and bracket, slip a valve cap over the stopper bar. The cap can be easily shaved down with a blade on one side to allow any adjustments.6e3f678.jpg

2007 Harley Davidson 1200XL Custom Sportster- brake light stays on all the time Trouble shooting hasn't helped. Any Advise?

Brake switch is stuck in closed position.

Or get yourself a schematic, examine the brake light connection to the power line and you will see the possible causes of the anomaly. Or a wire that is always hot when ignition is on has managed to touch your brake hot line thus leaving the light on all the time that the ignition is in the "on" position.

Brake light stays on all the time

There are two brake light switches on your bike. One for the front brake and it's located in the right handlebar switch housing and a pressure switch that is usually underneath the bike somewhere for the rear brake. You can find the rear brake light switch by following the metal brake line that comes out of the rear brake master cylinder until you come to a switch with some wires on it. On the older bikes, you could unplug the wires to see which switch was holding the light on. If the brake light goes off when you unplug the wires, it's this pressure switch that has the light held on. If the light stays on, it is the front brake light switch. On your bike, check for looseness in the front brake lever. If the lever and pin are worn, this will cause the lever to not depress the switch in the side of the switch housing facing the front brake lever. Your front brake switch may be broken. Odds are that the front brake switch is the one causing the problem.

I have '98 Polo that has been laid up for 6months.

Brakes wont rust over in 6 months. Sounds like the parking brake is stuck. Check the parking brake lever for slop and free play. If it goes up and down with no force the release catch is stuck. Use a flathead screw driver and manually trip the release. Hope this helps.

Brake lights stay on

Ok, the brake light is turned on when the brake lever is pulled. The switch is actually located in the right switch housing along with the right turn signal switch, starter switch, and throttle. It's simple button switch. When the lever is pulled, it pivots on the pivot pin and small tang on the bottom side to the lever swings FORWARD releasing the swith turning on the light. When you let go the tang swing backwards depressing the button turning off the light.

Loosen the bolts that hold your front brake master cylinder to the handlebar and slide the master cylinder back towards the switch houslng as far as you can. They should be touching. If the light still won't turn off, you'll have to take the right hand switch housing apart and replace the small switch.

The brake light stays and will not operate with front or rear lever

I'm assuming that you are saying that the brake light is staying on and neither the front nor rear brake lever makes any difference.

Check the postition of the front master cylinder and the throttle control switch housing. They must be positioned so that they are snug against each other. If there is too much distance between the switch housing and the master cylinder, the little brake light switch will be constantly in the outward postion turning on the brake light. Depressing either lever will have no effect.

If that's not the problem, go to the rear brake lever and check the adjustment of the rear brake lever. It must have some freeplay so that the rear master cylinder returns all the way when you let off the brake. If not, the rear brake will get tighter and tighter as you ride and use the brake.

Good Luck

Brake Light Stays On

I just had the same thing. The brake light actuarer in inside the brake lever on the bars. If the lever is worn, the actuator moves aside and the brake light stays on. Remove the brake lever and push the little black switch. If the brake light goes out replace the lever and actuator.
