Question about 1998 Yamaha YZF-R1
2007 yamaha R1 Blown motor. All stock All service history complete and met.. 11,000 miles. 3rd gear 40mph slowing. BAM hole the size of your hand in front of engine. Did not go down. Dealer wants $1200.00 to take down and tell me ( the obvious?) Yamaha blew me off, said I should have purchased extended warranty. Can someone tell me WHY?!? Older and non thrash owner. Are these motorcycle engines considered "throw-aways"?
There engines are not "throw-aways". Yours may be an exception. The only thing that would punch a hole in the case as you described, is a rock kicked up by the front tire, a broken connecting rod or a gear breaking apart and a large part of the gear being slammed into the casing by the crankshaft. The standard service procedures would never prevent a broken rod or gear. The rod would have to have been defective from the factory. The gear may have been defective but with the extreme pressure an engine puts on gears no manufacturer would, or should, back up a warranty unless you can prove defects in the gear. Look inside the hole, turn the crankshaft and see what you can see. I suggest that you get an engine from a motorcycle salvage yard. Save the old engine for spare parts. Google motorcycle salvage honda and see what you can find.
