Well this could be a number of items, but I would think your prime suspect would be a tappet (lifter). This is a hard one to figure out without being able to walk around the bike and actually listen to the motor. On the bright side if you wanted to take it to the dealer they may be able to narrow it down for as little as $50.
The real problem is the way noise travels around the engine. You could have a collasped or collasping tappet, or a bent push rod, or even something wrong in the valve train. What usually is done is that you start at the tappets / lifters and inspect them, then the pushrods, then the valve train. You either repair or replace what is worn. It can get expensive say if you need a new valve.
Sorry I can't tell you exactly what the noise is but I hope this gives you a good start.

How do you tighten the front turn signal on a 1991 Harley heritage softail

Sorry but i do not go back that far and as you have still not had an answer unhappily it looks like others do not either. Depending on later styles that might be the same if there is an Allen key socket in the housing and. or a 1/2 inch nut on a mounting stud you would use those.

Front end wobble 0n 2005 Heritage Softail

Hi Anonymous, and the usual suspects are:
1. Improperly loaded motorcycle. Non standard equipment on the front end such asheavy radio receivers, extra lightning equipment or luggage tends to cause unstable handling.
2. Incorrect air suspension pressure.
3. Damaged tire(s) or improper front-rear tire combination
4. Irregular or peaked front tire tread wear.
5. Incorrect tire pressure.
6. Shock absorber not functioning normally.
7. Loose wheel axle nuts.
8. Excessive wheel hub bearing play.
9. Improper vehicle alignment.
10.Steering head bearings improperly adjusted.
11. Tire and wheel unbalanced.
12. Rims and tires out of round or eccentric with hub.
13. Rims and tires out-of-true sideways.
14. Shock absorber improperly adjusted.
15. Worn engine stabilizer links.
16. Damaged rear engine isolation mounts.
17. Swing arm pivot shaft nut improperly tightened or assembled.
Good luck and have nice day

I have a 2002 HD Heritage Softail Classic with an intermitent growling noise in the lower front end of the motor. It is louder when the engine is cold. The noise disapates when riding. Had all the fluids...

I don't work on the Twin Cam engines but I'll take a guess on this one. Your Softail is equipped with the Twin Cam 88-B engine. The engine is a counterbalanced engine that is different from the standard TC88 engine. The counterbalancer is located in the lower front of the engine cases. Go to this site to see what it looks like and where it's located. This may be where your problem is located. Keep in mind that I'm not a Twin Cam mechanic. I work on the Evolution and earlier engines and I'm not very familiar with the TC88-B engine but if the mechanics are stumped, I can't do any worse.

Good Luck
