Question about 1983 Yamaha XJ 650

3 Answers

After being parked for about one to two months, I got the motorcycle (1983 Yamaha Maxim 650cc) to start but running rough. When I last rode it, it was running fine. I cleaned the carburators and all the electrical connections. I changed spark plugs and put another set of ignition coils thinking the original went bad. It didn't do a thing. The motorcycle will keep on running if the choke is left on, but once I take the choke off, it dies. So if I ride it with the choke on, and while speeding up I take the choke off, it keeps on going. If I reduce speed getting ready to stop and pull the clutch lever, the motorcycle dies. Any suggestions?

Either you have a intake leak or plugged idle jets in the carb, you can check inlet leaks by spraying carb cleaner on them while the bike is running, if the idle smooths out when you spray the intake boot, that means they are leaking. the idle jets will require you to rebuild the carbs again

Greetings all. Bought an 1983 Yamaha XJ650 Maxim late last year and love it. It ran great last fall and took it on a 2500 km road trip this June and it ran great. Two days after I got back it started...

Have you changed the oil and cleaned the air filter, after the fuel tap problem.
fuel in the oil can cause this symptom. the fuel ends up in the sump when the taps fail as yours did
also check choke is not stuck open, and battery is in good condition

As soon as I put gas in the tank it all drains out, presumably passing through the carbs and out of the air intake. bike's a 1980 yamaha maxim 650cc.

they have a vacumn opperated fuel tap, should only allow fuel to pass when the engine is running, unless you have it on pri(prime) if it runs out with the tap on run(on) or res(reserve) the tap need a kit.
unless the fuel and vacumn hoses have been mixed up
