Had the same problem. If the starter turns the engine, check the spark plug for wear or excessive gap. Using the electrical system to start it may deprive it of just enough juice to overcome the gap or worn plug. Using the rope of course uses none.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, externally charge the battery and have it load tested. This is to eliminate the chance of a weakening battery.

Offhand, check the starter relay. When the start button is pressed, the relay should click and provide contact to the starter motor. To locate the starter relay, follow the cable from the battery's + terminal.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

I have a virago 535 when i go to start it the starter just spin`s pop it in to gear pull back a couple times an then it will catch to start ..help what do i need to do

Hi, Jamie557255 the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced.
