Question about kawasaki VN 800 Vulcan Classic Motorcycles

1 Answer

Bike has sat a few months. Engine turned over,but cranked slow. Tried jump starting,would not turn over. Replaced battery and charged. Engine will not turn over...emits a "click" noise from fuse panel under seat. All fuses appear good and wires all connected as far as I can tell. Would appreciate any insight into this matter. Thanks.(1999 model)

The clicking sound is the starter relay - which could be the reason the electric starter isn't working. To test, locate the relay and use a large screwdriver to bridge the two large cables attached to the top of it. If the starter spins the engine over when you do this, it most likely means that the starter relay needs to be replaced.
If the starter doesn't spin, then you've likely got a bad starter motor, or a bad connection going between the relay and the starter.

I have a 1994 katana 750 gsx-f i can fully charge the battery and when i do the reading it comes up with 13.4 and when its started and tested i was get 15 volts now if i leave the bike sit and let it get...

should not be 15 volts 14v - 14.30v max 15 volts wile running is over charging the battery. and you dont want that as over time the battery over heats and can go bang. check the voltage regulator...

Fuel relay

Short answer, your batter is bad. or is disCHARGED:
Long.:

wont crank?
no engine, cranks ,unless the starting system works.
unless pushed fast, like my car or i park on a hill and coast jump my car.(M/T tranny rule)

NO crank, is the true failure here:
slow Cranks are , bad battery , or a discharged battery , due to bad charging system or parked for 3 months or longer.

so ill assume its NO CRANK.
I turn the key TO START and the starter fails to CRANK.
the starter motor is dead. (key clue 1)
so i attach a set of jumper cables to my Caddy, running and this car
now cranks and RUNS (you left that out. above, huh? runs)

turnsover means nothing, because the engine starter turns over
and the engine can turn over and the engine can run,
once running the EFI system SUSTAINS runninng.
so there are 4 states there. (4 phases )

No cranks #1 reason to be slow , are a bad battery
so I charge that battery, and see how if it cranks , now?
it dont crank means a bad battery
it does work( crank) see how long it works.../?
if it dies again, or better, check the cars Alternator for by measuring
accross the battery terminals running , with any volt meter.
13.3 to 15vdc is a good alternator running the engine.
if NOT, the charge system is bad. (system)

On some cars the IMMO can block Cranking or for sure blocks
fueling after 2 seconds. So. watch the IMMO light on the dash.
Immo is the Immoblizer. option.

My '95 volvo 960 got hot, and battery died. Tried to jump start in and it would crank but not start.

Dead Battery

Always try & charge,it is unsafe to jump
a dead battery, as it may have shorted cells

If the engine rotates,turns over,cranks,it is the same thing

To say it won't crank or won't turn over is wrong
That is a no start

1---Engine does turn over,rotates,or cranks

2----Engine is a no start or won't start or won't fire, no iginition

If my car jump time would it still try to turn over but slow?

You have a timing chain which should last 150,000 miles or more.
It could jump time and it could crank slowly but I doubt it.
Do you know if the battery is fully charged ?
Was anything wrong before you replaced the battery ?
Did you try to crank the engine after it cooled off ?

Have a 1999 Dodge Durango, the vehicle shut itself off while parked, I tried jumping the vehicle and it will not turn over, The dislay reads "no Bus" what does that mean?

if you let vechicle set battery will run down.not in month time frame, if you going let it set either crank vechicle let idle keep battery charged or disconnect battery if vechicle going to set for long time period,i would keep battery charged up using battery charger.

Replaced battery, bike cranked, after riding 4 miles, just ticks

check battery leads (both ends) , Then make sure battery is charged 100% (verry important) Get out your (Digital) volt meter set it to DC volts Connect leads to the Battery, it should have at least 12.6 v , Watch meter and start engine, if meter drops below 10.0 volts your battery may be weak and will have to be replaced, or your starter is'nt mechanicaly efficient and will have to be fixed or replaced. While engine is running note voltage should be 12.6-13v volts, then rev engine to 3000 RPM , meter should read 13.5- 15 vdc. If not you have a problem with your stator or regulator/rectifier.

Battery won't hold charge

The battery should be taken out for a long drive or put on a charger for a few hours to determine if it is dead or not. a few minutes with the engine running will not let the battery recover sufficiently.
Check the water level in the battery, ensure the water covers the plates but is below the rings.
If you have done this, then the battery has probably sulfated and will need to be replaced.

Honda Deauville will not start.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

The click is significant. It indicates that the starting relay is engaging but for some reason, the starter motor is not cranking. This could either be a faulty starter relay (particularly the contacts) or a faulty starter motor (specifically, the carbon brushes). To determine which:
  • with the side covers off, expose the starter relay particularly the 2 large terminals;
  • have somebody start the bike normally using the key and button start switch;
  • determine if indeed the clicking is coming from the starter relay;
  • while the start button is still pressed, jump the 2 big terminals;
  • if the engine cranks, then the internal contacts of the starter relay are corroded or burned;
  • if the engine will not crank, then the starter motor is faulty or it can not turn the engine..
A few additional ideas:
  • externally charge the battery;
  • drain the tank and carbs of stale fuel;
  • refill with fresh fuel;
  • remove the plugs, center stand the bike, engage 1st gear, rotate rear wheel to exercise engine.
  • Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.
