Hi I have a 2004 Aprilia Falco and it wont start. It turns over ok, it is getting fuel because if you open the thottle a little the engine cranking speed decreases, but no spark, (I think). I have put a strobe probe against one of the high tension leads as I turned the motor over and it doesnt illuminate. It has an after market Meta System M3757T V2 motor cycle alarm and engine immobiliser fitted which appears to be operating ok, (but I'm not 100% sure). I have checked all the fuses, but have not physically removed the plugs, as this involves pulling a lot of stuff off. The plugs were checked, cleaned and gapped only about 1000kms ago, and the bike has only done 7000kms. Any advise or things to check would be greatly appreciated. Regards Craig

    The two wires you refer to are, (I presume) the ones coming out of the computer under the seat behind the battery. There were no error warnings or codes on the instrument LCD display when I turned the ignition on before connecting these wires nor were there any after I connected them and turned on the ignition. I can definitly confirm that there is no spark to the plugs as I have strobed all 4 HT leads, (the engine has 2 spark plugs per cylinder) and there are no voltage pulses to any of them. Each cylinder has a seperate coil pack so whatever is causing the no spark situation is somewhere before the coils. Regards Craig.

    Hey after I sent my last comment to you I realised that I had not properly energised the ignition because I hadnt deactivated the engine imobiliser. When I did this the EFI diagnostic came up with a - 1, does that mean anything to you? With these wires disconnected again there is no EFI code visable on the display. Regards Craig.

    This was sucessful, (I think) in displaying a code on the LCD instrument screen, but I still dont know what the problem is.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, have you tried checking for any ECU Fault Codes?

Offhand, if the unit is still under warranty, it maybe to your advantage to seek the services of the dealer for fault diagnosis.

Alternately, should you consider a DIY (do-it-yourself) diagnostics:

  • the right side body panel / lower gas tank cover would have to be removed carefully;
  • this panel is held by 2 X 4mm Allen bolts and several lock tabs;
  • temporarily jumper the 2 unconnected wires near the harness and the battery;
  • turn ignition switch to ON/RUN without starting;
  • read displayed message;
  • it should be "DIAG xx" where xx are numbers representing component that would require further in-depth checking.
Postback displayed fault codes.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

    Have not come accross an a 1 fault code.  Usually the codes are 2 digits. Could it possibly be a 4 1? If yes, then it would be the tip-over sensor  (fall sensor): possibly loosely connecvted, sensor out of position or wiring faulty.

Aprilia SL1000. I just changed the sprag clutch bearing and reassembled everything When I tried to start it it barely turned over and the battery terminals got extremely hot fast. Please help. Thanks.

Question edited for clarity, add maker and full model details.
Question moved to model category.

Remove the battery terminals and the starter terminals and clean them shiny with a wire brush. Smear the contacts with Vaseline to stop oxidization and tighten the contacts. Also check the starter relay.

12 volts and wont crank

do a load test on the battery and see what you get. if it passes then you need start hunting, if you where riding in two days ago and parked it then im sure itssomething simple. check your main fuse your power to the starter button and back to the starter relay insure your starter relay is working and then power the starter itself.

Oil question

i did some research. i wanted to get rotella 15/40 synthetic but walmart did not have it. all they had was 5/40 synthetic. is this ok to use in the falco? have been using 10/40 synthetic spectro from dealer. Rotella is made for heavy duty diesel engines buy some for your PowerStroke Ford or Cummins Dodge. If you are hellbent to buy Shell products get the Advance VSX4 oil .....if you can find it.,,,
