Question about 2008 Harley Davidson FLHRC Road King Classic

Hello I have a 2001 harley road king . When sitting still and trying to put in 1st gear . I am getting a slight grinding sound . And the bike is hard to go in gear . Do you have a solution or do i need to just adjust the clutch and how do you adjust the clutch . Thank you tim

A slight grinding noise is common when sitting idling with the clutch out and then trying to put the transmission is first gear, especially when the transmission is cold. You can try holding the clutch in for a short while and then try putting it into gear to see if that stops it. I'm not sure adjusting the clutch is going to help much. It's a matter of stuff spinning and other stuff not spinning in the transmission.

If you want to adjust the clutch, find the "bellows" type cover that covers the adjuster in the middle of the cable. Work this cover up or down and uncover the cable adjuster. Break the lock nut loose and adjust the adjuster inward making the cable shorter. Adjust it all the way in.

Remove the derby cover. You may want to stand the bike up fairly straight up to do this to make sure you don't have any oil running out of the primary. With the derby cover off, you'll see the clutch pressure plate. In the middle of the plate, you'll see a screw with a lock nut on it. Make sure the bike is in neutral. Break the locknut loose. The engine may try to turn a bit when you try to break the nut loose. Turn the screw inward until you feel a resistance. I usually do this then back the screw back out a bit and then back in several times to make sure I'm at the point of resistance, no further. You don't want to start releasing the clutch with the screw. Once you've turned the screw inward until you feel the resistance, back it back out 1/2 to 1 turn. Lock the lock nut back down and reinstall the derby cover.

Then, adjust the cable adjuster out until you have about an 1/8 inch of free travel at your clutch lever pivot. I usually use a nickel between the clutch lever and the lever stancion.

20002 Road king will not fully engauge into 1st gear

Check the position of the shifter arm. It should be sitting just behind the front bolt on the transmission cover plate. If it is not then the shifter arm has likely been loose and rotated on the shifter shaft.

Is the tranny oil full? what kind of noise? Is there any grinding or other noises, or is it a whining sound? Does the clutch adjustment seem any differnt than it was prior to the noise? I would start with the throwout bearing, first.

Grind at 19 mph in primary

I would think that if the noise was being made by your transmission, it would start whenever you put the transmission in second gear and continue until you shifted to another gear, not at 19 mph only.

This sounds like a vibration that is specific to the engine rpm at that speed. It may sound like a grind but may actually be a vibration noise. Try to recreate the noise with the bike sitting still in neutral. Be careful not to allow the engine to overheat though.

Try other things to help you narrow down the source of the sound. When it starts, gently touch the brakes while maintaining the speed to try to eliminate the brakes. Does the noise change if you accellerated slightly or back off the throttle slightly.

It's very unusual for a transmission to make a noise in only one gear. I've found that if a transmission is making a noise, it makes the noise all the time but maybe louder at some speeds than others.

raise the front of the bike off the ground with a scissor jack and then lift up on the front wheel while somebody holds the bike. You should not feel it move back and forth but it should still turn freely. There should be NO sideways play in it is what I am trying to say but still be able to turn smoothly

Wine in 5th gear

Your transmission has a straight cut 5th gear and not a helical cut 5th gear.
HD fixed this whine with the 2010 touring models.

2001 H-D Road King engine knock

For valve train noise try these:
1. Low oil pressure caused by oil feed pump not functioning
properly or oil passages obstructed.
2. Faulty hydraulic lifter(s).
3. Bent push rod(s).
4. Incorrect push rod length.
5. Rocker arm binding on shaft.
6. Valve sticking in guide.
7. Chain tensioning spring or shoe worn.
8. Cam(s), cam gear(s) or cam bushing(s) worn.
9. Cam timing incorrect.

If it is a bottom end knock, an engine tear down may be in order.

Transmission engagment issues

First thing to do is to check the shifter pawl adjustment. If you do not have a service manual then you need to get one. It will explain how to adjust shifter pawl and save you money on many other problems down the road.
