Question about Harley Davidson XLH 1000 Sportster Motorcycles

Engine does not want to idel without enricher on. Pops beck through carb when at a high idle or when accelerating. Also has a hard time taking throttle. Have set static timing and pionts gap still no luck. Running Std. bore 10:1 pistons S&S Super B carb and Andrew R5 cams. Any ideas? im running out of my own. Thanks

It is running way too lean, back out the air fuel ratio screw a little.

if the engine is in good shape..screw in both carb jets adjusting screws till they seat lightly, then back them out 1 1/2 turns, srew in the throttle adj screw a turn and start the motor,,warning if the chain is on make sure the blade isnt likely to touch anything when the engine starts as you will have to have the brake off to get started and adjusted. With the engine running, adjust the throttle srew until it is idling just above shutting off speed, then adjust the "L" low speed jet to get the best idling speed without srewing it in much, reset the throttle srew, then , while trying to accelerate suddenly each time, open the Low jet a little at a time until the machine accelerates smoothly without hesitation. Reset the throttle srew to a position that the chain stops running at idle and check again that the acceleration is without hesitation ( usually with "L" jet about 1/4 turn out more than best idling). The high "H" jet can now be set to give the best power while cutting a block of wood.

2003 sportster is havin a real hard time starting in the mornings, backfires sometimes while trying

not sure what you have tried but here are a few things that could be the cause

bad or fouled plugs
bad plug cables (sometimes you can't tell by just looking at them)
plug gap too close or too wide
bad battery
damaged wire or loose connection at battery or coils
water or dirt in fuel system
fuel vent system plugged. (best to see a dealer for this)

2008 dyna wide glide won't hold idel speed after 15 minutes of running. Changed spark plugs, good for 2 days then same problem back. Bad gasoline?

If the bike is equipped with a carburetor, try not using the enricher (choke) so long. The enricher circuit in the carburetor is extremely rich. I see people let their bikes run for almost ten minutes with the enricher on and they can't figure out why they are fouling plugs. Only run the enricher until you can get the engine to run with the throttle. I use the throttle lock located on the underside of the throttle grip. Just idle the engine up that about 1500-1700 RPM, turn the enricher off, and tighten the little knob just enough to hold the throttle and keep the engine running until it warms up. Prevents you from fouling plugs. If this is not the case or you have fuel injection on your bike, you may need to take it to a qualified mechanic. I don't advise tearing into your carb or fuel injection unless you know what you're doing.

The only thing that I can guess is happening is the engine is spitting back while you're trying to start the engine. This ignites any gasoline that is in the carb or throttle body and the flame is burning you air filter. The thing to do is to continue to turn the engine. This sucks the flame into the engine. It won't hurt anything because after all, you are trying to start a fire in the engine.

If your bike equipped with a carb, pull the enricher out, milk the throttle about twice, turn the ignition switch on, and then push the start button while leaving the throttle completely closed. This is very important, leave the throttle closed. This is how an enricher circuit works. If you crack the throttle open even the slightest bit, the air is drawn through the carb instead of the enricher circuit and this causes the spit back in the carb. It will do the same thing with fuel injection. Start the bike with the throttle completely closed. It should fire and go to a high idle with the enricher out or with a fuel injected engine.

I just bought an 04 heritage that has a hypercharger on it and it has to warm up quite a bit before it will idle without the choke. you can smell that it is running very rich. what do i need to do?

Odds are that you need to richen up your carb. You said that you can smell that the mixture is very rich. This is true if you're using the enricher. The enricher is designed to be very rich and it will foul plugs if you allow it to run too long. I usually run it only long enough to allow me to set the throttle lock and keep the bike running at a high idle without the enricher.

To actually remedy the problem and shorten the time you have to run the enricher, you probably need to enriched the low speed jet. The carb comes jetted very lean from the factory and usually does a lot of coughing and spitting out of the carb. If your slow speed jet is a #45, you need to go to either a #48 or a #50 slow jet.

Idles high and misses when cold. after you run it for a while it runs normal

You didn't say whether your bike was fuel injected or carbureted. A fuel injected bike or a carbed bike with the enricher pulled out will idle high. It is supposed to. Now, it should not miss though. It might be time for a new set of spark plugs. The enricher runs a very rich mixture and will foul a plug if you run it too long. I always tell people to only run the enricher just long enough so you can keep the bike running with the hand throttle. Turn the enricher off as soon as possible to prevent fouling a plug. If the bike is fuel injected, you'll have to take it back to the dealer to have it adjusted.

This is probably a fuel-related issue, not a mechanical one. With the choke on you are enriching the gas/oil fuel mixture to the engine. This indicates that the carb is probably set too "lean" which can cause poor idling, acceleration and even mechanical damage to the engine due to lack of lubrication esp. at full throttle. Running it with the choke on will have ill effects also. You may need a diaghram or carb rebuild kit. Check condition of fuel filter in the gas tank and the fuel lines themselves. Take the covers off the carb (paying attention to location of gaskets and diaghrams) and spray liberally with non-flammable brake parts cleaner. Don't blow out the passages with high PSI strength air and don't soak the carburetor in carb or parts cleaner....then let dry, re-install and try to start and run. The Low and High speed mixture screws can be adjusted on these. You can buy the special tool or make one out of steel brake line tubing or 22 gauge female disconnect wired spade terminals stuck on thje end of a screwdriver...or you can remove them completely (notijg how many turns it took to remove them) and cut notches in them for use with a regular screwdriver...I just think the carb needs some cleaning and minor adjusting and it may work....if not rebuild it or get a new carb.

1994 fxdl engine pops when accelerating

It sounds like the classic lean carb problem. What we here in the rest of the country is richen the carb up a bit.

First, the carb comes with a #42 slow jet. We replace that with a #45. We also add a 3mm washer under the needle. The washer is approx. 0.020" - 0.023" thick. This raises the needle by that much and enriches the mid range just a bit. We normally leave the main jet alone. We also drill out the "anti-tamper" plug over the idle mixture adjustment screw so we can adjust that for the best idle. Of course, you must take the carb off the bike and remove the float bowl and the diaphagm and piston. I'd also check the accelerator pump diaghragm while I had the float bowl off. Take the two remaining screws out of the small circular cover on the bottom of the float bowl. The diaghragm and a spring is under the cover. Just look at the old parts when you take them out and put them back in the same way. There's a lip on the edge of the diaghram that sits in a groove and the spring goes on bottom side of the diaghragm.

Now, this is going to enrichen your mixture in the idle, slow speed, and midrange RPM of the engine. How it will effect your emissions test, I have no idea. It may pass or it may not once the mods are made.

ISC valve stuck
ignition timing too far advanced a idle.
