Solenoid is bad or shaft is broken.

These models had a weak starter clutch, specifically a poorly manufactured pressfit bearing in the assembly, you can get one for around 150-200 bucks. I've heard tell of a fix that involves using self tapping screws/rivets/small bolts etc but have not bothered to try this since it's more than worth my while to throw down $150 and save myself several hours of screwing around.

SOURCE: 1999 ttr 250 starter motor is not engaging

I would guess it is the starer clutch, also called the one way clutch. I went on to www.bikebandit.com and looked up your bike and it has a nice exploded veiw of your starter clutch . I will try to put a direct link to it , hopefully it will take you to it. http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/yamaha-motorcycle-tt250rl-1999/o/m7707
if not go put in your bike and look under starter clutch.

The starter motor will not engage

Hi, Paul the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Have a 200cc chinese quad. I think its an air cooled Lifan engine. I can hear starter motor spinning but dosnt turn engine. any advise would be apreciated

Try taking a look at the starter and flywheel while attempting to start the engine. Does the small gear at the end of the starter move forward and engage the flywheel when you try to start the engine? Could it be stuck? The small gear must move forward to engage the flywheel. Keep your fingers away from the moving parts.

Engine starter spins and will not start motor somethines.

Remove the engine cover to expose the starter motor (or take the starter off). Lubricate the starter bendix, its the gear atop the starter motor shaft, use Marvel Mystery oil and then work the bendix a bit and it should fix it. If the teeth on the bendix or flywheel are damaged obviously that is where the problem lies.

My truck motor wont turn over? The started is kicking in ' but the motor does not turn to start?

You say your starter is kicking in..is it spinning and not turning the engine over? If so you have a problem with the flywheel teeth or starter gears not engaging..if no spin just a click..your battery is to weak to turn engine or you starter selonoid or starter needs replaced...good luck..

Electric Starter spins but does not engage. Could it be the solenoid?

Its likely the starter motor itself having worn teeth or is seized. The solenoid takes the electrical signal and engages the starter which kicks over the flywheel. If the solenoid goes out, you'd hear a click and the starter motor would not spin.

KTM 530 2009 starter spins but motor will not turn over

Hi, Anonymous the starter clutch is a separate mechanical gear driven component that is activated by the starter motor, it engages the clutch pack gear or the flywheel gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one "ONE DIRECTION" only and once the engine starts allows the gear to free spin with engine rotation. If the starter gear free spins in "BOTH DIRECTIONS" then the drive gear has failed, it might be serviceable on some models but usually needs to be replaced.

92 honda civic hatchback new starter spins does not engage flywheel, could it be a fuse

unlikely as the motor spins. It appears that the motore solenoid is allowing the motor to spin before engaging the teeth in the ring gear. ON a lot of starters the pivot pin is adjustable to allow for correct engagement.Remove the starter and check that the solenoid is fact connected to the clutch part of the starter. Check that you have the correct starter for the engine

Starter motor whines but wont engage with engine on my rover P2

You will need a new starter rebuilt ect. to replace the one you currently have that is defective. you sound like you are spinning the starter motor but the starter bendix is no longer engaging the flexplate/flywheel on the engine.

Battery is good but when I turn it on it just clicks won't start, maybe after 20 times it starts

Without hearing the sound it makes - it's kind of hard to diagnose.

The engine starting process consists of turning the key to start, the starter motor's rotor moving forward to engage the engine's flywheel, and then the starter motor 's "rotor" spinning until you move the key from "start" to "run". You can hear the starter motor spinning - but one usually can't hear the rotor moving forward to engage the flywheel. As a result, you hear the odd spinning sound - which is the starter rotor spinning. The engine never actually turns over because the rotor never engages the fly wheel. If this is the case, then it is very likely that your starter needs to be checked and / or replaced.

Good luck!
