It dont realy matter how far away it is,, but most bikes have the coil just under the fule tank,, thats about 1.5 feet from the fly wheel
the coil wont be upset if its bolted right above the fly wheel as there is nothing in it that the fly wheel can upset,,,,any magnets are all inside the fly wheel and will have little to no efect on the coil at all

Should the coil and flywheel touch?

Wouldn't have thought so as the fly wheel spins it will wear away anything that it touches. You will need to adjust the position of the coil away from fly wheel.

Why does my chain saw lose power and shut off as soon as it gets hot.can't restart until it cools off.

Check coil pic up or the electrical pick up in the pull string housing. Remove that and u will see the fly wheel next to that is the electrical pick up .look at fly wheel make sure magnets are clean surface ,they are in the fly wheel itself.after that remove coil and clean surface that faces fly wheel. Using a match book cover place it between fly wheel and coil ,make sure it moves but not falls out snug ,tighten coil screws and remove match book cover. If it dose it again re place coil look for small engine shop in your area and the can help get u a new one .weak spark means coil, sparkplug

How to check the ignition coil?

To properly check the coil takes an expensive machine. Coils have a very low failure rate. However, if you doubt the coil, they are not terribly expensive. If you swap the coil make sure to properly set the air gap (distance from the fly wheel) and clean the area the coil mounts. Failure to get a good ground at the mounting location will prevent the coil from performing properly.

Flywheel or something grings against the starter when clutch is engaged

There is no way the ring gear will hit the starter pinion unless the fly wheel bolts on the crank shaft or loose allowing the flywheel to run out of true. If you have had clutch/ rear seal work done lately the fly wheel will only fit in one position and if that was ignored at some time then the fly wheel will run out and touch the starter pinion.. I would also check the adjustment on the starter pinion as it has to be set by the lever pivot to a correct distance or it will touch the teeth of the ring gear

No spark

The spark generator that sits close to the fly wheel only needs a mm gap. Make sure that this is the case. If there is a small gap there is possibly a break in the wire or the points under the fly wheel may also be rusty.

8 hp tecumseh with old type ignition (points, etc) I intalled a new coil, condenser, points, plug, but get no spark at all. Cannot find the problem.

Make sure the flywheel key is a new one. use .020 brass or non metalic shim stock to space the coil away from the flywheel, set the points to be about .016 - .018 when fully open and make sure the ground wire on the coil is not grounded to anything.

What is distance from coil to stator 14 in. poulan chain saw

I think you are asking for gap between the fly wheel and the ignition module. A business or index card works great. 0.1 - 0.3 mm. GL
