With the float bowl off and the float assembled in the carb, hold the carb on it's side with the needle and seat hinge upwards.

Set the float height to 0.630" to 0.670" (16-17mm) from the "bottom" of the float to the gasket surface where the float bowl gasket seal is.

These carbs are notorious for leaking past the needle and seat even when the float level is set correctly. They make a tool for refurbishing the seat in the carb as it is not replacable but the tool is very expensive for what it is and the amount of use will get out of it ($100). Sometimes I've set the float level an additional 1mm low (18mm) to put more pressure on the needle if it does leak. Good Luck!

Hi, Anthony and the usual suspects are:
1. Idle circuit and transfer ports clogged.
2. Air fuel mixture adjustment too lean.
3. Pilot jet clogged.
4. Faulty accelerator pump.
5. Float level too low.
6. Float bowl contaminated old fuel, water, dirt, rust, etc.
7. Float bowl vent or overflow tube clogged.
8. Fuel flow to carburetor restricted.
9. Intake manifold leak.
10. The gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
11. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
12. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.
13. Multi carburetors not in sync.

Why does front cyl. base gasket keep blowing out on 1984 sportster with stroker kit?

It's unusual for an Ironhead Sportster to blow a base gasket. The reason is that the cylinder bolts directly to the crankcase via four short studs. I would suspect either a warped cylinder base or case. Now, the Evolution Sporty's are bad about base leaks.

Good Luck

How to set float

To set the float on your CV carburetor is a bit different from other floats. It has a height setting of between 0.413" to 0.453" (10.5-11.5mm). But, it is set with the carb tilted at a 15-20° angle. Here again, a picture is worth a thousand words. If you will contact me directly at wd4ity@bellsouth.net, I'll send you a picture of how to set the float. Make sure you remind me of what you need as I cannot remember what everyone wants.

Good Luck

I have a 2003 harley sportster When I Start it the over flow vent hose flows gas. What do you think the problem is? Thank you Tom

It sounds like your float level is just a bit high in the carburetor. Your bike is equipped with a vacuum operated petcock. When the engine is not running, there is no vacuum on the intake and therefore, not vacuum on the petcock. When there is no vacuum on the petcock, the fuel is turned off.

When you start the engine, vacuum is created and applied to the petcock turning on the fuel. If the float level is set too high or you have a piece of trash in the needle and seat in the carb, the float bowl will overfill and gasoline will run out of the overflow hose.

You need to take the carb off the engine, remove the float bowl, take the float and the needle out and clean out the needle and seat. Then check the float height. Now, this is an area where you need a manual. The float sets with the carb on a 15° to 20°angle. With it on this angle, you set the height to 0.413-0.453" from the carburetor flange surface to the top of the float. I usually try to set the float at the lowest fuel level setting with would be the 0.453" setting.

Good Luck
Steve
