Most likely your ignition coil has a bad winding..have it checked out, if not your module may be bad.

My bike dies while riding

Sounds like it may be sucking air from one place or another. You may have a small hole in a fuel hose, problem with fuel filter, or just a weak connector where the tube makes a connection. Something a little more major would be a gasket under the carburetor needing replacement. Check the tubes first. A fault with gasoline that contains ethanol is that they bring on deterioration of fuel lines. This is the easiest fix.

My 2000 honda rancher has recently started to die after riding a few miles. It acts like the fuel stops getting through. It starts to stutter and then just dies and won't start again.. Needless to say it...

that is just a hand primer for when you run out of fuel. you may need to change the fuel filter. and clean out the fuel chamber and veins in the carb. if filter is old 2 years then it should be changed.

I have a 2002 fatboy and while it rides fine while cruising,it dies when I come to a stop.It wont idle unless I'm on the throttle

If your Fatboy is carb equipped you need to set the idle speed a bit higher. If you're still running the stock carb, remove the air cleaner cover. You'll see a square looking plastic top on the carb. Just to the right (toward the front of the bike) you'll see a screw. This is the idle stop screw. Turn it clockwise to increase the idle speed. Set the idle speed with the engine at full operating temp. It should idle at about 1000 RPM.

If your bike is fuel injected, you'll have to take it to a shop to get the idle speed set as it's done electronically.

Good Luck

I have a 1994 flstf i was on the freeway could'nt get over 65 mph then it died sometimes it starts right up ride about a mile it dies then it cranks over but wont start untill it sits awhile

sounds like blocked fuel filter , dirt or water fuel sytem or in carb or even coils breaking down , it is known that coils test o.k which gives them an intitial charge but on side of duel coils fail when hot .and are hard to diagnose even with proper equiptment , i have test coils and this is the case.

sounds like fuel problem but keep in mind coil if persists .

hope this helps

You need to check the fuel filter -- follow the fuel line from the tank down to the filter, should be tucked in below the seat..

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Almost always on bikes with carbs with no prep on storage, a carb pulldown is required. This is to enable the cleaning off the varnish like film coating on the inside of the carbs, the jets, holes and most surfaces. This is a result of the fuel turning to varnish like after sometime. While the actual cleaning is straightforward, it is the carb removal and re-installation that maybe more of a challenge. A few notes to consider:
  • count the number of turns on the air screw;
  • take notes of what hose goes to where;
  • soak the dis-assembled internal components in carb cleaner;
  • might as well drain and clean the tanks;
  • a can of compressed air maybe used to blow through the vents, pinholes and jets. Be careful as some have thin / small washers, rubber o-rings and springs;
  • a service manual may come in handy.
Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Does it restart after a few minutes?
Then, check the fuel filter and hoses, could be clogged ;-)

Map sensor

Hi,

Have not worked on an HD but my thoughts and additional guesses would be:
1. fuel contamination (water at bottom of tank);
2. primary pump (in my case it was inside the fuel tank & might not be present in your bike);
3. fuel lines & clamps to & from primary pump or to the carbs;
4. in line filters;
5. vacuum controlled fuel valve (oppose to the usual manual petcock)
6. if it were the MAP sensor, bike wouldn't even run a block away + idling would be rough;
7. by chance are you using a Power Commander?

Also your post "bike will start and run fine for a few blocks then die" indicates that indeed fuel got into the carbs before but not when running meaning the bike used what was inside the bowl and was not replenished.  Alternately, the fuel flow to the carbs might not be sufficient and there is a leak or a blockage somewhere.

As said might not work for your bike but has come across some of the above on numerous occasions.

Good luck and Kind regards.

Ride Safe.
