I have a 1977 GS 750 and it starts right up and runs but it makes a popping noise (sounds like from carbs) over 3000 RPM and tops out about 50 MPH in 5th! If you walk by the bike you can really smell the gas. The guy I got the bike from said he put different jets in but couldn't get it right without the bike back firing. The bike has air pods and the exhaust is loud so I think that it may have been modified but they look stock. Where do I start.

Was given a junk yard gs 750 -somewhere between 1977-1979-how can I tell ? where are the #'s Many Thanks

The numbers should be on the front of the frame just ahead of the gas tank and behind the steering sector on the right-hand side. Often times it will tell you the year model too. If not, copy down the v.i.n. and any police officer can run it for you through their computer and it will give you all the information you want. Good luck; John

I bought a 1979 GS 750 yesterday. The engine seems fine when first started, but after a few minutes begins to rattle from the top end. The noise disappears over 2000 rpm. Can you help please?

I have a 1977 GS750 and I found that the valves begin to make noise when the valve shims need replacing. You might see if this is similar in your manual for your machine.

Fuel leak where fuel tube goes into carb.

Turn the petcock valve off and the flow should stop. If the fuel line is long enough, cut the broken line just above the break then re-attach to the nipple.
