Question about 2002 Honda VT 750 C2 Shadow

1 Answer

Engine shuts off when rolling the throttle

I have a 2002 Honda Shadow with about 100k miles. Recently, while riding, the bike was losing power at a slow speed when rolling the throttle. On the next ride, anytime the throttle was opened even a small amount, the engine would start "coughing" and then shut off.

Opening the air cleaner compartment, I found engine oil puddled in the bottom of the case. I also found a small amount of oil on the outside of the rear cylinder near the head gasket. Could these be related?

They could be related - but what you need to do is first clean out the oil that has collected in the air filter housing - and replace the air filter. Then, clean the oil from the engine - Simple Green and an old tooth brush works great for this. Wash the engine and surrounding areas with soap and water.
Now, with things cleaned off, you'll be able to tell where the oil is coming from after a short test ride. It could be that the oil you saw near the head gasket was actually running from the air box. Hopefully, a new air filter will cure the problems you had with low power and poor throttle response.

My 2002 honda shadow spirit clicks when i try to start it and will not start. Where should I start??

The clicking is the starter solenoid trying to activate but the battery has not got enough power
Check battery has at least 12.5volts when fully charged, if batt is good it will crank the engine over rapidly

Loss of power at the end of each gear

If it continues to rev, it is probably not a carb problem.
I assume is has a wet clutch:ie the clutch runs in the engine oil.

Try an oil change, use a four stroke motorcycle engine oil,
Car oils have friction modifiers in them that can cause clutch slip.
and sometimes the expensive synthetic oils are just too slippery.
So try for a mineral oil, the bike shop will help you choose.

I doubt the bike has 100k on it, thats alot of riding! If it runs and looks good just figure it is a typo and ride it. As far as the oil filter that bike uses a spin on filter, it is painted black, screws on the front of the engine just above the oil pan just to the right of center.

2002 honda shadow deluxe custom 750. 100 miles only on this 8yr old bike. When trying to start the bike pull the choke hit the start button and sometimes it would start most of the time engine turns but no...

Sounds like the battery may be weak, recharge and test, maybe replace. As far as starting, most Hondas will not start if you open the throttle any at all. Shadows being liquid cooled are generally cold natured, but you should be able to ride away with the choke on in 1 or 2 minutes, you might have to ride as far as 4 or 5 miles at highway speed before you can take the choke fully off. If it is taking longer than these times, you will need to remove and clean the carbs. the low speed jets may be partially blocked up.
