I replaced the thermostat and water pump and the car still over heats. Another guy told me to check the oil to make sure a head gasket wasn't gone and it was fine. Another guy said something about bleeding the air out but I cant find a bleeder. What else could it be?

sounds like you have a head gasket gone bad. these cause overheating and the compression gases cause the air in the system and to boil out of the system. as such will cause the heater not to blow hot air, as steam will contain heat very long. the white smoke upon start up is a tell tale sign that the gasket has blown and needs replacement. have a head gasket test done. it could also be a cracked head or even a block, but head gaskets are a problem.

Get yourself another mechanic. This guy is not doing his job. It shouldn't cost $1600 to change a water pump and fuel pump. No proper mechanic would remove a thermostat to replace the O-ring and put the old thermstat back in. It wouldn't be uncommon for the coolant level to drop after changing the thermostat. It probably only needs to be topped up. No, the motor doesn't have to come out to replace the head gasket and I don't see it costing $2500. Before you spend any more money there, take the car somewhere else and get another opinion. I bet that if you fill up the coolant bottle for 2 0r 3 days it will stop losing coolant. Hope this helps.

Hi, check you have heat coming out the heater in the car put it on hottest setting and see what happens if it comes out cold then the chances are the head gasket has gone and is pushing gasses into the coolant system causing an air lock and then over heating.

check the oil for signs of a white substance look on the oil level stick and also inside the oil filler cap if their is any signs of milky substance then this is proof head gasket has gone.

I don't see where you replace thermostat, when replacing water pump very good idea to also replace thermostat, if you done that and stillls over heat's, then you will need to do a block test any repair shop can do this or you can buy a test block kit at any auto part's, this test will let you know if you have bad cylinder head gasket's, you will not always get water in the oil when head gasket's are bad, about the only time that you get oil in coolant is if you have bad in take gasket, check oil dip stick for water.

hi if it has low compression then this will mean one of three things the first and most likely is that the head gasket has gone this can be replaced but your head will need sending off to be pressure tested and skimmed to make sure it will work when refitted.
the second problem could be a cracked head in this case the head and gasket will need replacing but remember to check the thermostat and water pump as this can cause the head gasket to blow and could be the cause of the problem in the first place so get these parts checked

the third problem could be blown piston rings this is less likely unless the car has been driven with no oil.

if it is the head gasket there will be coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant, I would check to make sure the electric fan is operating, could also be a stuck thermostat or clogged radiator (both of which are MUCH cheaper to check and repair than a head gasket change.

it seems like damaged cylinder head gasket, check for water in oil/oil in water, water loss.. replace gasket and check cylinder head pressure

Could be just the OIL COOLER. VW IS CORRECT.
