Blke runs for a couple miles then dies

Bike is a 2002, 1200 conversion with a racing ignition. It runs for a couple miles then dies and won't restart until it sits for awhile. It seems to stall more under acceleration. New battery, which tested good. Suffers from oil blowby. I Recently cleaned the oil out of the air cleaner assembly.

Now, this may sound overly simple but I've seen it work more times that I care to tell. Next time you go for a ride, loosen your fuel cap. Don't take it off, just loosen it. If the vent system in your fuel tank is not working, it will do this exact thing you're describing. Check your vent system to be sure it's open and working. I've seen rusty fuel caps not vent and I've seen "dirt dobber" wasp nest built in the vent tubes of fuel tanks. The bike runs for a short distance, sputters and dies. Shortly, it start back up but will do the same thing in just about the time and distance.

If that's not it, go by an electronics store and buy a small can of "component cooler". Take the cover off the ignition unit. Ride the bike until it dies. When it dies, spray the electronic ignition unit with the component cooler and see if the bike will start up immediately after you cool the unit. If it does, try it again until you're satisfied that the problem is heat affecting the ignition unit. If this test proves not to be the problem. we'll have to look for something else.

You can also try running it without the air filter. Run it until it dies and then look into the carb and "milk" the throttle a couple of times. You should see a jet of fuel from the accelerator pump squirt into the carb throat. If you do, then your problem is not fuel related. If you don't see the fuel squirt into the carb, your engine is starving for fuel for some reason. Check the fuel supply hoses and the petcock. The petcock on your bike is vacuum operated. There is a small vacuum line that feeds vacuum to the VOES switch and the backside of the petcock. I've seen lots of these petcocks go bad and leave the riders stranded with a full tank of fuel but none to the carb. I'd replace the petcock with either a pre-1996 unit or a good aftermarket unit, a manually operated one.

The oil going into the breather is common. On a bike that is several years old, like yours, the small "umbrella" seals in the rocker box cover has probably hardened and is not sealing well. To fix the problem, pull the rocker boxes off and replace the unbrellas and the gaskets. Reroute the crankcase breather system away from the air cleaner. Good Luck!

Sputtered out and now it won't stay running; dies when put in gear.

Mass air flow , crank sensor . I wouldn't discount anything . Having a scan tool that can view engine sensor data would be a great help too , testing fuel pressure and flow and back pressure test the exhaust .

Series II 4.0 litre V8 Land Rover Discovery runs but stalls out after a few miles. The vehicle restarts after cooling down it seems. This generally takes a couple of hours or a tow back home. Service

Sounds like the same issue I had with my 2002 Discovery 2 V8. Mine used to run for about 10 minutes, then die, usually in the most inconvenient locations! The Crank sensor is in need of replacement. It sits near the exhaust downpipe (behind a heat shield) but obviously this shield isn't enough as they die after about 80,000-100,000 miles. Just get it replaced and I think your issues will solved.

Why won't 1981 suzuki gs 550 bike won't start after riding it and it's warmed up?

hi
glad i served a long time with wisco and used drag raced for them at one time
sounds to me that your ignition is to far retarded
which means the ignition will spark closer to (TDC)
top dead center
some people advanced the ignition 3 deg to stop the engine from smoking when they did away with 4 star fuel
and gave us unleaded fuel
doing this the performance is great and fast acceleration
but it also make the engine run hotter than normal
unless you have up jetted the carbs
and fitted a non standard exhaust system
the whole idea is get the fuel/air mixture in and out as fast as possible

if you still have points
take your points cover off and adjust your points baseplate
undo the three screws that hold it in place
and just move it about 3 deg towards the rear of the engine
or may be you have a electronic ignition fitted
if so do the same thing
and advance the ignition 3 deg

hope this works for you

ride safe

I was driving down the road going home from work at a speed of about 50mph(about 7 miles from work). The car had a slight miss to it but kept going for about another 1/2 mile and then have another slight...

Well, I would try to check the spark to make sure the ignition system is providing spark to the spark plugs. Then, I would check fuel pressure, to make sure that the injectors are getting enough pressure to provide gas to the cylinders, using a fuel pressure gauge on the rail.

1992 Kawasaki VN 1500 Vulcan Classic will not turn over

Hi, Christine94448 before testing any electrical component in the Starting Circuit it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage, the battery is faulty and must be replaced. AGM type batteries fall into this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries.
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Engine Run Switch is "FAULTY" or corroded.
4. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
5. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
6. FOB battery low or dead.
7. Faulty ignition switch.
8. Faulty starter button.
9. Faulty kickstand, clutch, neutral safety switch.
10. Security alarm needs a reset.
11. Starter relay, solenoid, starter motor or circuit wiring faulty.
12. Starter armature or field coils have failed.
13. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
14. Faulty ignition relay.
15. The electric starter is working but starter clutch has failed.
16. Check for engine trouble codes.

My Yumbo Dakar 200cc bike dies after riding in 5th gear reving medium-highish for a couple of minutes, it usually just dies after i hit the clutch (coasting), but on long runs @ around 50-60mph in 5th gear...

G'day,
I have a couple of ideas what may help.
First I would think it was starving for fuel.Or maybe an unusual ignition system fault- So how do we find out?
Well-you could try checking the bike for spark immediately after the bike stops.
Remove the spark plug-Re-fit to the cap-place plug resting on metal where you can see it(DO NOT HOLD PLUG-HIGH VOLTAGE)-kick over & check for spark. If theres no spark-try a new plug but if the problem persists then the bike has a faulty ignition(coil,cap,plug,stator.ignition/kill switch, wireing)
I think it is more likely starving for fuel.
A faulty fuel tank filler cap vent or carby vent tube pinched or blocked.
To check the filler cap-ride the bike & when the problem just starts-quickly crack open the fuel tank filler cap to let air in/out. If bike runs ok then the cap is blocked.
To check the carby vents -just look at them & make sure none are blocked or pinched. They usually come from each side of the carby & one from the bottom(usually clear or semi-clear hoses).
I hope that this helps you with your problem.
Regards Andrew Porrelli
