Question about 1997 Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit S

Just bought the bike! My bandit 1200S, 1997, runs smoothly when the engine is cool. But at hot temps when the bike warms up, the idle increases to 3000rpms. It doesnt want to fall back(unless i rev it high and let it the rpms fall from high revs). Also when it gets hot, gas pours out of the fuel supply tube at the male/female connection between the fuel supply valve and the tube that leads to the carbs. The two symptoms seam to be linked to hot engine temps. I would like to hear your opinion on the issue. I think it is a carb or fuel supply problem. I also think it could be caused by excess pressure in the gas tank when the engine is hot. I think this because the high pressure in the gas tank(related to heat) could expand the fluids and force more gas out of the tank: causing the gas leak, and causing the increase in rpms(because there is more gas forced into the carbs) Also the gas leak stops after i take off the gas cap. The gas cap is aftermarket and is just a spin off(no key). Could this cause the pressure increase. I havent checked if taking the gas cap off while running will bring the rpms from 3000 back to normal idle. I will check that next. I have been messing with the idle screw to change it to compensate the idle but it doesnt make much different. Thanks for your help guys... you are the pros

Throw the aftermarket gas cap in the garbage and buy the proper gas cap. it will solve all your problems

OK.... firstly change the fuel cap, the tank needs to be vented correctly so pressure will equalise. Normally a rich fuel concentration will cause the engine to die not run high. From what your telling me it sounds like the throttle cables are not adjusted properly, if they are too tight the rpm's will not come back to idle. if this is the case you might be able to twist the throttle the opposite direction to lower the revs at idle. For the excess fuel problem, it could be what you say about the fuel cap, another thing will be the Needle and Seat might need changing or the float levels are not adjusted correctly. Whilst your there fit a good inline fuel filter, it will stop problems in the future.

Try buying new diaframs for your carbs, because of the diafram and piston operation, if the diafram becomes weak due to heat from your engine, and by the diafram not beeing rigid enough, it hesitates to lift the needle out of the jet causing the lack of fuel at low tack/rpm when throttling up or accelerating slowly.

i wouldnt use champion plugs on a japenese bike,there will be a perfectly good NGK plug to use instead,just ask when you go to buy them.Champion plugs have caused me to burn holes in pistons in the past

My 2005 Yamaha R6 is overheating at idle...like sitting at red lights.. I wonder if its a temp switch or a blown fuse, or even a wiring problem. Any help?


if your cooling fan is not switching on then i would check fuses then if all fuses are good check for 12V at you cooling fan when temp gets between half and 3/4 way to hot . if you have no voltage it could be a temp sensor or relay . if you have voltage there your fan motor has gone bad and needs to be replaced . another thing to check is the hoses running to the radiator . let the bike idle and warm up and check the temp of the radiator hoses . if one is much cooler than it should be then you might have a bad thermostat on your bike and its not opening enough to let coolant flow at idle. water pump could be going bad as well. if the bike warms up and fan does not kick on untill you rev it up a bit i would check the thermostat and waterpump

My 2000 suzuki katana has a high idle when its hot


This is a fairly common problem with performance bikes. The problem comes from your thermostat. The thermostat is designed to open and close at a certain temp. What I suspect is happening is that your thermostat is opening too early for the bike to get to operating temp, hence the long time to warm up. Once you open up the bike warms up and the oil viscosity thins to operating temp and the engine revs more freely. Now your idle screws are set for a "cold" bike and revs high.

The other side is that the oil you are using may not be designed for your bike. Often people put performance synthetic oils in their bikes to perform better, but the production bikes are designed for thicker oils. Oils like 5w40 will be very thin allowing your bike to rev faster due to thinner oil, but you are causing extra wear on the parts due to less oil barrier.

First I suggest make sure you have the correct spec oil for you bike, then check that you have the correct thermostat in your cooling system. A performance bikes usual operating temp is between 95-105 deg C. This means your thermostat should only open at about 88deg C to start the regulation process.

idle adjust?
there SHOULD be an adjuster under the seat or gastank within easy reach. Clockwise to increase rpm, ccl to decrease rpm. idle around 1400rpm when engine is at normal operating temp. Good luck!

1997 Mazda dies when warm - runs smooth when cool


possibly a bad module------cracked---or???? In any case you may get expansion as engine compartment warms up----module shuts you down. Sometimes really hard to diagnose and just putting in a new module is "spendy"----especially if it turns out not to solve the problem!

1991 dodge colt won't idle when engine is cold.


probably oil, it may be too thick when it's cold but once it warms up it liquefies and your engine runs smoothly. you could try changing oil, I'm guessing if you have a high performance oil the chances this is the problem may be greater since high performance things are usually geared towards working well when everything is hot
