Starter is starting to go out. Sounds like the starter clutch is giving up. The starter clutch is only supposed to go one direction. The winging noise is it's inability to hold under the torque needed to turn it over again. Or...... it could be a bad or low battery. Generally you should have over 10.5 volts at the battery when cranking the bike over. If it drops below that then the contacts can keep full contact to transfer the voltage need to keep in engaged. Even if the battery is the problem though , that same problem takes a beating on the starter and it will eventually need to be replaced.

When I press the start button the starter turns but the gear does not engage. Battery is fine.

The gear is probably engaging the ring gear but it isn't turning the engine over. The "over running clutch" or "starter clutch" inside the starter is probably bad. You can replace just this part and it's cheaper than buying a new starter. But, only if you can do the work yourself. If you have to pay someone to do the job, the additional time required to disassemble and replace the clutch in starter will quickly eat up any savings you might have realized. If you're going to have to pay someone to do the work, just replace the entire starter. But, you can talk to the mechanic about this and see what the difference in price would be.

Good luck

Starter wont engauge just spins

If you can hear the starter motor spinning but the engine is not turning over, most likely the starter clutch, or over running clutch, in the starter is bad. This can be repaired without replacing the entire starter. It required that the starter be taken off the bike and disassembled. If you can do the job yourself, you can save money by repairing the starter. If you're going to have to pay someone to do the job, simply replace the starter. In this later case, the labor time involved in disassembly and reassembly of the starter would offset any savings realized by repairing the starter.

Good Luck

2003 Harley-Davidson Softail Deuce FXSTDI My starter spins over and clicks , but want start my 2003 Harley-Davidson Softail Deuce FXSTDI HAS A NRW BATTERY HELP PLEASE!!!

If your starter is spinning but the engine is not turning over, you over running clutch or Bendix is bad. On the Nippondenso style starter on the late bikes, this starter clutch is inside of the starter. You must pull the starter off and disassemble it to repair the starter. If you can do the job yourself, you can repair the starter and save some money. If you're going to have to pay a mechanic to do the work, simply replace the starter. Any money saved by repairing the starter in this case would be quickly depleted in labor cost.

Good Luck

Need to replace starter cluch assy 99 Harley Davidson

Replacing the starter clutch is pretty straight forward. Simply take the starter apart, swap the bearings from the old clutch to the new one, and reassemble.

This is one of those places where a picture is worth a thousand words.
If you'd like blow up of the starter contact me a wd4ity@bellsouth.net I'll scan the drawing in and send it to you. Make sure you tell me what you want. I get so many request that I can't remember all of them.

You have to pull the outer primary cover off to get to the bolts that hold the start on. Make sure you disconnect the battery.

2003 jetta gl manual trans-positive battery and ground starter cables replaced...now have plenty of juice going to starter...but it grinds when i turn the ignition...now it doesn't start at...

I presume you mean 'grinds when I turn the ignition..(to start)'.
If this is so, it's most likely the starter motor 'drive (overun) clutch is faulty.

Either replace the starter motor complete or replace the drive clutch assy on the original.
The latter should be cheaper (especially if you can source a new 'drive clutch' and fit it yourself).

Assy of starter clutch on 2003 Harley Davidson

The starter on a late model Harley is a typical Nippondenso gear reduction type starter. They are all basically the same except for size.
To replace the starter clutch inside the starter assembly requires disassembly of the starter assembly.

I you will contact me directly, I will scan the procedure and drawings out of a service manual for you.

There is two bolts 10mm i thimk that holds starter on. you need to disconnect the battery first. Also disconnect the starter wire. Sometimes I drop the exhaust manifold if i feel like it. You can remove the starter to see if it is actually working by hooking it up to a battery. If the starter clutch assy is bad, you have to remove the frame rail, the engine, take off the 11 bolts from the rear cover, remove the alternator rotor assy, etc. This happens sometimes when the starter is good. Is good to have friend help when r&r engine..Hope this helps you with your scoot, Rick
