I am assuming that the engine has reached sufficient temperature to idle. A cold engine is not going to idle with the lean jetting they come from the factory with. If the engine will not idle after it warms up, you may have a problem with the slow speed jet being clogged up or a vacuum leak somewhere.

If the bike has been sitting for a long while, the carb is probably in need of cleaning. However, there may be trash in the carb as well that has stopped up the slow speed jet. The carburetor will have to be disassembled and cleaned to fix this problem. If you disassemble the carb, check to see what size the slow jet is. It should be a #45 on your bike. If so, try either a #48 or a #50 for better performance. You can also take the needle out of the slide and put a 0.020 inch (0.5mm) shim under the stop on top of the needle. This will RAISE the needle slightly making the midrange mixture just a little bit richer. A 3mm flat washer is just about right to do this with. Use only one. I think you'll be very pleased with the results. Also, drill and remove the anti-tamper plug that is over the idle mixture adjustment screw. This way you can adjust the idle mixture and get a smoother idle. Just be careful when you drill the plug and don't go too deep and damage the screw. Drill a small hole in the plug, turn a sheet metal screw into the hole, and pull the plug out.

There may also be a vacuum leak. There is a vacuum hose connected to the rear of the carb that supplies vacuum to the VOES switch and the fuel petcock. Check this hose for leaks or to see if it has come loose. I have also seen the vacuum operated petcock give a problem like this as well. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the back of the petcock, plug it with something, and start the bike. It won't run long because the carb will not get any fuel from the tank but it will run long enough for you to tell if this is the problem. If so, I'd recommend replacement of the petcock with an aftermarket manually operated version. Pingle makes a good fuel petcock. It could also be the intake manifold gaskets but this is rare in my experience. Good luck!!

Bike won't stay on unless choke is on

The choke makes the fuel/air mixture richer, so your stalling issue tells you that the main and/or idle jets are blocked. Take the carb off and clean all the jets. If you remove the mixture screw, tighten it gently first counting to the nearest quarter turn how far in it goes and write it down. Also write down what notch setting the main jet needle is on. If is has fuel injection, it is a whole different ballgame!

99 FXDWG, Choke cable broke, bike stalled then wouldn't start. I fixed the choke cable but bike still won't start. Any ideas?

"Crank" and "turn over" mean exactly the same thing. I think you mean it won't "fire". How did your choke cable break on the highway? You shouldn't have been pulling (closing) the choke at that point - does that ride have other issues?

It might be flooded now - try letting it sit for several hours, then try starting with the throttle WIDE OPEN and no choke - that helps clear extra gas out of the cylinders.

You might also need to pull the spark plugs and dry them out thoroughly.

Why Tiller cranks but will not run when you need it to till?

If you don't have a manual, could can read/download it at this link.
If the engine stalls under load, the mixture may be too lean. There should be a mixture screw on the carburetor. Note its position, and turn it counter-clockwise 1/8 of a turn to see if there is any improvement in engine performance. Repeat this but don't exceed about a half turn.
The tank has a vent and this should be kept vertical under the cylinder cover in the small "pocket" in the cylinder cover.
Lack of power can be caused by a dirty air filter or blocked muffler screen.

Does a 2003 dyna wide glide. Have a Manuel. Choke on a carb model ? And where is it. It starts. But cold natured. Till its warm you have to work throttle till its half warm

Have a look. If one is fitted, it will be next to the carb and have the word "Choke" written on it. Most bikes nowadays have an automatic choke that is operated by a full turn of the throttle before starting, it will switch off when a bi-metallic strip reaches the set temperature.

How do i adjust the choke on a 2005 honda shadow

Not to sure about this one, ok, if the choke wont stay out, then try to trace the choke cable to the carby, have a close look and see which parts move on the carby when you activate the choke, some thing just needs to be tightened up, so that the choke stays on. Also, you say the bike stalls and runs rough, is this with the choke on? If yes, then that is just a sign that you dont need so much choke on. Just try half choke. Do you live in a warm climate? if so, then you dont need much choke . So there is no adjustment really, only by the amount of choke you apply. Also remember, never use the choke if the engine is already warm. And, only use the choke for the first start of the day, when the engine is stone cold. The correct way to to start a cold bike engine is, pull the choke on fully, crank over engine, but DO NOT give it throttle, (this defeats the purpose of using the choke), when engine fires up and starts, slowly push the choke in till a smooth, high idle is acheived. You should be able to ride off slowly, and push the choke off after about a mile.

98 CBR F3 doesn't stay running w/o choke on

There seems to be fuel starvation to the carbs.
Check the fuel filter and the petcock, not bad too to clean the carb/s.

97 TL 1000 won't start after winter storage

Install new sparkplugs. Activate choke. Do not touch throttle. Push starter button. Do not touch throttle. If bike stalls repeat until it stays running, then you may give it a little throttle. If I give my TL any throttle on start up it floods. It usually takes 2 or 3 tries where the bike starts then stalls before it stays running. DO NOT TOUCH THROTTLE UNTIL IT IDLES. THEN GENTLEY.
