I had difficulty with my key in my 98 sl1 too but I discovered that I just had to push on the shifter until you hear it click, then you could jimmy the key a bit to get it out.
I had the same problem, I found out that there was a spring that broke off in the shifter and got jamed into the shifter's path, I removed the spring and was able to get the key out after the shifter was all the way into the parked position. I however have another problem now, when I did so the wiring harness started to smoke the next day when I went to start the car.
I have had this problem with mine due to high wear, and I just used the spare as addressed from above because the vehicle is not my sole vehicle. This will fail eventually and you will need to have the Tumbler assembly removed and replaced. It runs around $150- $250 depending on the shop.
I had the same problem. My solution was simple and effective, but not neccessarily correct. For a year I disconnected the battery every time I parked, then one day the key came out. It happened to have a slight bend, so I used my spare, and have not had a problem since
You need to have the ignition lock cylnder replaced.
