Sounds like a very lean mix; confirm by checking the sparkplug tips. If the burn is very light brown to almost whitish, then it would be lean - too much air, too little fuel. Check for an air leak in the air filter box/enclosure. This would also happen if the air filter has been replaced with an aftermarket free breather (like K & Ns) or the exhaust has been replaced and no jettings done.

I have a 1996 Suzuki Savage 650. 3100 miles. It has sat up for several years. Upon restoring it, now the engine knocks. Any thoughts? Sounds like a rod thrown, but I know that's not it. It will run. Could it be the timing chain with a kink? Sound comes from the area of the cylinder. Oil has been changed, valves checked -ok, (meaning covers removed and knocking not there.)
