Hi,
Honda Shadow VT1100 1996
When I accelerate and on a certain rev count the bike is missing (losing power). I did replace sparkplugs change petrol and oil filter but problem still exists. What else can I check to rectify the problem.
Thanks
Theo
I don't know if you saw what I had recently posted about my 97 VT1100 but I had similar problem with it sputtering and loosing power in a head wind. What I found and believe to be the problem because it hasn't done it since was the connectors in the harness right behind the gas tank under the front of the front seat there are 3 single wires. I believe they are all red , the connector on the bigger red wire from years of vibration and corrosion had become loose and even though it looked connected was not making a solid connection so I cut the connector out along with the 2 smaller red wires one with a white tracer I don't remember what the other one was and soldered and heat shrunk them all to get the best connections possible. Another similar problem that I found that you should probably check as a little preventative maintenance while you are right there is the connectors coming from the stator. I was changing the antifreeze and had the seat off so I sat on my bike without the seat on to warm it up to top off the coolant. I wasn't sitting on it running for more than 5 seconds when I asked my self the question why is my a how shall I put this, my bits and pieces getting so hot ? I started checking the wires from the stator and they were hot as a firecracker and I knew this was not good. The wire connectors were missing and had been heat shrunk so I new someone had been messing around with them. I had just gotten this bike by the way but upon closer inspection found that they had done a really bad job of splicing them together. When a wire has a bad connection it causes a lot of resistance and results in excessive heat and with this excessive heat eventually the insulation will melt causing the wires to short and quit charging your battery along with ruining the stator and regulator not to mention the possibility of fire. So I soldered and heat shrunk all the wires. They can always be unsoldered if something needs to be taken apart. Its a lot easier doing this in your driveway then it is to fix along side the road in the middle of the night.
