I recently posted step-by-step oil-changing instructions for the Honda Metropolitan motor scooter on the urbanscootin.com forum (http://www.urbanscootin.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=13357).
One member, whose views I respect, added the following comment (near the end of the thread):
"If I put 0.6 quarts of oil in my Met , it's right at the very top of the dipstick, maybe even slightly over the top hash mark . Not so good, since mine runs better and goes faster if I run it about halfway up the hash marks, which ends up being about 500 ml. or about half a quart. I've heard this echoed from other veteran riders, as well."
I'm trying to determine if this idea is myth or reality. Have you ever heard of such a thing? Is there any basis in physics or engine design that would cause performance to improve significantly with less motor oil?
In theory this could work, having less motor oil means less oil is being sprayed around, and there is more room for oil pressure to increase, reducing pressure on engine components. BUT its not a very clever idea as less oil means more chance of seizure at high tempratures, you should follow the manual unless you know what you're doing!
P.S: I find the hash marks on a honda dipstick, are a sort of 'threshold' so the oil level is safe to be anywhere between the marks.
Well in theory it could recude windage losses as the crank passes through the oil in the crankcase / sump but in all reality I doubt it makes any difference
