2007 yz450f has a rumble when the clutch is released all the way both in gear and in neutral. If it's idling in neutral and I pull the clutch in the rumble stops. When i release the clutch all the way again the low rumble starts again, same thing happens if I'm in gear and I let the clutch out all the way I can hear the rumble. I pulled off the clutch cover and pulled out the clutch and friction plates to check them. They seemed to be fine.
Also, if I rev it high in fourth or fifth gear the clutch slips a little bit. I don't know if the two problems are related. I've tried to adjust the clutch with the knob on the handlebars with no success.
Thank you for any help in advance.
The bearing for the clutch outer drum may be worn. The adjustment on the handlebars is to set lever free play(about 1/2 inch) before the cable becomes tight and operates the clutch release inside. Make sure the outer drum cover is tight--check with the clutch lever to make sure the plate releases the disks and plates.
I doubt the problems are related. New fiber friction plates are probably needed. The rumble described would indicate a bad bearing on the mainshaft. The shaft the clutch mounts onto. Hard to say if it is the left or right bearing (or both), but either way the case will need to split to replace the bearings. I would replace both bearings and also the sprocket shaft outer bearing while you are in the crankcase. A new seal on the sprocket shaft would be a nice touch as well.
Synthetic oils and "Special" lubricants put into the gearbox can cause slippage and some will cause the cork on the friction plates to swell. Never use synthetics in your bike.
