It depends on the amount of abuse and the attention to maintance the bike has received in the past. Clutches can last 15+ years or can be destroyed in a few months of hard (abusive) use.

In this case, you might investigate simply changing the oil. Fresh oil sometimes makes a huge difference - especially with a wet clutch. If the oil has been changed regularly and recently, it's possible the clutch is in need of replacement or possibly a simple adjustment. With the lever all the way released, you should have a small amount of free-play in the lever before resistance is felt. 10MM at the end of the lever, or about 1-2MM at the cable end of free-play is desired.

If this change happened suddenly it's possible that something has failed internally. If so, I do not advise that the bike be run until it is serviced.

Noticed that the revs would build too quickly and did not match the 2004 Rav4 speed in higher gears. 1st gear seems OK. If I accelerate gradually there are no problems. So I'm guessing I need my clutch...

You are exactly right. The clutch is going out. The cable is an automatic adjusting cable. So there is no adjustment. It will require a new clutch.

Have to hold clutch to keep bike from dieing

clutch plate adjusment or cable adjustment, it sounds like the clutch is staying engaged, try loosening the cable on the clutch until there is lots of slack init and try to start the bike, if it jerks forward then you are going to have to adjust/replace the internal clutch plates hope this helps

sounds like the fluid level is too low & all you are doing is burning up the clutches insde when you rev up the motor!
Check its level & look for dark dirty color It should be a cherry color!
Also see if it smells BURNT!
Another fault could be the valve body has clutch particles in it so get it serviced ASAP!

Car cies when brakes are applied, and won't go back ingear.

sounds like your clutch needs adjusting . There should be adjustments on the top or bottom of cable. If adjustment is ok check clutch pedal points the brackets that support it sometimes crack if the cable gets stiff
