Question about 1985 Yamaha XJ 700 X Maxim

1 Answer

My 1985 yamaha xj 700 wont start up. it worked fine until i had to replace the oil seals. we disassembled the engine to accomplish this and i think my buddy may have put the cams in the opposite side of where theyre supposed to be. the better we timed the engine the less it wants to fire. it's at supposedly perfect timing right now but it acts like its sufficating. what should i do?

First disassemble top part of the engine again, and before you start get yourself a Haynes or clymers book of that model and do it exactly as it says

What causes oil in my nuber one spark plug hole on a 1985 yamaha maxim 700

There are rings on the pistons that could be worn or it could be a valve stem seal that is leaking. The only way to tell is a cylinder leak down test.

Oil capacity?

Should be 3.5 Liters / quarts with the filter change. Put in 3 liters then top up as needed to get the level to the top of the viewing window.

To check your oil, bike should be level, on it's center stand, engine should NOT be running!

Any oil viscosity between 10w30 and 20w50 will work just fine. Smaller numbers if the weather's cooler and/or you only do short rides. Bigger numbers for hot weather and longer rides.

Need to put oil in forks of a 1985 yamaha xj 700

Should be drain screws at the bottom, close to the axel shaft, and one giant bolt on the top of the fork where it comes out of the triple clamp. Remove the lower to drain, replace it. Refill by removing the upper. If I recall correctly, it wants 250ml of fork oil (typically a special 5w oil you need to buy at a motorcycle shop DO NOT USE ENGINE OIL!)

What kind of oil should i use for my 1985 yamaha maix xj 700??

Absent evidence to the contrary and based on the age of your machine, you should probably use 'normal' oil. I don't think you will gain any benefit from the use of the expensive synthetic. Your bike is air cooled? Air cooled engines are tougher on oil than are water cooled engines. Find out the recommended weight and service rating from Yamaha. Use that weight and service class at a minimum and a higher service rating if available. Go to to a good auto parts place, not the "fast food" version, and ask the counter guy and/or find a comphy seat in the oil asle and start reading the cans.

Let me know how you make out with this.
