To check if the battery or rather the bike's charging system is ok is to run the engine and connect the volt meter to the battery terminals , red to positive and black to negative and thn get the reading as to the rate the charging system is charging ..it should be at around 13.5 to 14volts!
If its not thn theres a problem to the charging system of your bike.
Hope this helps!

Measure your voltage from the stator to a chassis ground. You should get more than 14VDC if your stator is working properly, or less than 13VDC if it is not.

Hope this helps,

I have a 1985 honda vt 500 c ....r&r'd plugs, air, oil &filter and it ran great all summer. Then it gradually started running poorly.Got harder to start and backfiring when trying to start it

dave there are a couple videos on checking the coil for spark i would take out a plug and put it in the socket lay it on the motor so end touches metal pull of other cyl wire so it don't start roll it over you will see a blue spark make sure your battery is charged fully if it works fine with fully charged battery it could be the battery not recovering fast enough these bikes do not work properly and act weird with a poor battery have the battery load tested if you are unsure and stator tests ok

Bike will only run on center 2 cylinders,it was woking fine and then it started to run ruff and now it only will run on 2 cylinders, the other 2 have spark.could it be a timing chain?or fuel? when i removed...

The timing chain runs the cams for all cylnders.so no it shouldnt be the chain
with 4 cylnder bikes the two outside cylnders run off the same coil, but if you say it has spark the next step is fuel.
Make sure the battery is good and the bike is charging, and put some new plugs in after the carb clean.

First why did the battery die? Is it Old? Did you check the charging sys.? Stator? your problem may not have been the battery starter could be stuck put it in gear and rock the bike see if bendix releases try it again check your sys.

I have a 1985 Suzuki GS700E. This is my question- Are the turn signals suposed to stay lit all the time, or only when they are blinking?

I'm pretty sure your Suzuki has running lights on the front...in other words the bulbs are dual filament for the front, with a dimmer running filament and a brighter turn signal filament, and the back are just single filament turn signals.
If you look in the parts list there is one part number for front bulbs, another for rear.

My bike only runs when being jumped off. when you take the jumpers off the bike quits running. I dont believe its the battery because I have charged it and it started the bike, Then died. What can I do so...

Hello, you will find that your battery is the problem. While it is starting your bike, it is not holding its charge, very common with batteries. Have it checked out with a load tester, this will tell you if it is holding voltage under load. You can also give it a quick test with a normal multi meter, select volts on the multi meter, check the voltage on your battery before you start, it should be in the mid 12s, start your bike with the bikes battery (do not jump start), as soon as the bike starts check the voltage again, it should be in the high 13s or 14s, if it is lower than your first reading (12s) than your charging system is faulty, stator, voltage regulator etc. It the reading is in the high 13s or 14 than your charging system is ok (it is telling you its charging), when the bike cuts out check the battery again, you will find the reading is lower than 10v (if the battery is faulty) good luck.

Battery does not recharge

Nice bike.

If the battery does not charge, maybe the battery is bad if it is over 2 years old.

If the new battery you get still doesn't charge, the equivalent of an alternator in a car is bad. Replace as necessary.

Actually, I have a 1985 Honda Interceptor that never had this part go bad.

Good luck to you.

Killing the battery when running

you need to replace the reg/rect . regulator not working properly, it's allowing to much current flowing through wire causing it to heat up and melt.

Carburetor on yamaha xj700 maxim x

Actually, they're not Hitachi carbs. Since you have a 1985 "Maxim-X", the model number is actually XJ700XN. The XJ700 does indeed have Hitachi carbs but your bike, the XJ700XN Maxim-X has BS33 Mikuni carbs.

Careful with the model number, the XJ700 and the XJ700X are entirely different bikes.

By the way, if you want more answers about your Maxim-X, feel free to visit the "Maximum Maxim-X" web site at www.maxim-x.com and the lesser known FTP site for the Maximum Maxim-X web site at www.maxim-x.com/pix
