Did someone have this engine apart? What sequence of events led to this happening? I'm thinking that the oil pump is not being driven - but am trying to figure out why.

Try swapping out with a new oil pump or a known good one.

Two things I can think of. did you prime the new oil pump?. If so the oil pump by pass valve may be stuck open. I often prime a pump with petroleum jelly as oil often leaks out .

Prime oil pump, 231 engine

You don't give the year and model, and I'm sure its not a Cutlass Ciera if it has a 231.
Usually its a good idea to pack the gears with grease or vaseline to help prime the pump. Since the pump is mounted on the outside of the engine it can be very difficult to get oil from the sump into the pump gears for the first time.

How do you prime the oil pump without disassembling the engine

Every time you drain the oil, the oil system drains
to some extent

Put oil in the filter & remove the injector fuse

Crank the engine awhile, to hopefully start oil flow

How do i prime the oil pump in a 99 e250 5.4L

Oil pump is self priming. You do not need to prime it. If not showing oil pressure, the sensor is probably defective. Make sure oil level is not low. If the vehicles water temperature gauge shows normal when running then oil pump is working fine. If it goes to the overheat mark then you may have defective oil pump, which is rare. Most temperature gauges go past the middle when you first start up but then drop back to normal once the engine thermostat opens up. Hope this helps.

Why do i have to prime my oil pump after every oil change?otherwise no oil pressure..79 ironhead...

You shouldn't be having to prime the oil pump with every oil change. If you're running the original oil tank in it's original position, when you drain the tank by removing the plug at the bottom of it, the oil line from the bottom of the tank going to the oil pump is still full of oil. As long a you're not doing something to drain that line, you should not have to prime the pump. It sounds like to me that you're removing the oil feed line to the pump in order to drain the tank. If you're doing it this way, you will have to prime the pump every time. Drain the oil from the oil tank by removing the drain plug from the tank.

Good Luck

Just replaced a 1998 catera engine now have no oil pressure was told i had to "prime the pump" how do i prime the oil pump?

The best way to prime the pump hoping that you havent ran the engine to long without oil pressure
is to remove the oil gauge switch ORoil light switch on the engine and get a connector with the correct thread to screw into the block and fit a hose to it and to a 1/2 ltr oil can pump oil in as hard as poss and then turn engine over IN REVERSE(Backwards) 3 times and then (pumping every time) refitswitch and start it should be ok....

How to replace oil pump 1997 honda accord does it need to be primed

You'll have to remove the oil pan to access the oil pump. And no it does not have to be primed. Why do you want to replace the oil pump? Did the oil pressure gauge indicate low pressure? If so did you check the oil pressure sending unit?

Zx12r, bike is overheating very much, changed oil filter and oil, changed the antifreeze in the radiator, but still have the same problem, any suggestions? knight_jaco@hotmail.com

Make sure the fan is operating properly.
Check the water pump for adequate output.
I think you have to "burp" the cooling system.
Check the manual.
