Question about Honda XR 200 Motorcycles

1 Answer

XR200 B model...newly mechanically completely refurbished...hard to start - won't idle without choke - only comes clean at around 2k rpm....when strobed - timing mark wanders until about 2k rpm - or at full advance.

Sounds like the carburetor(s) is/are not flowing fuel properly - was it/were they "refurbished", as well?
The so-called "gasoline" they are selling these days has a shelf life of about 1 month before it goes bad, 6 months before it turns into something alot like maple syrup or worse. Bad gas makes gum and varnish in carburetors - motorcyles carbs are especially vulnerable due to being tiny.
Please have a competent motorcycle mechanic overhaul your carb(s).

Idles with 1/2 choke. If open choke, or throttle - engine dies without any RPM spike. Carb was cleaned, jet is clean. When idles, there is gas in the primer bulb.

Hi, Andrew and the usual suspects are:

1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.

2. Fuel filter clogged.

3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.

4. Float needle and seat sticking.

5. Float level too low.

6. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.

7. Idle adjusting screw set too low.

8. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.

9. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.

10. Slow fuel jet clogged.

How do I lower rpm so idle is correct? it's stable around 5k rpm which is too high

Yea, that is way too high. Thankfully your bike is nice and old so idle adjustment is simple. Look for a knob in between the 2nd and 3rd cylinders carburetors. This should be accessible without removing any bodywork, but I'm not certain with your bike. You should set your idle to something between 1~2k rpm when the bike is fully warmed up. If your carb hasn't been serviced in awhile having it idle at 2k rpm will be more stable.

Honda element 03. Normally starts up at 1,000 rpm in park and shifts into drive smoothly. Sometimes starts up b/w 1.5 and 2k rpm at idle and JERKS into drive or reverse.Solutions?

Cars not control choke themselves electronically, this is likely the car trying to warm itself up quickly. The jerking will occurs anytime you shift into gear at an RPM over a low idle as the torque converter is being engaged. If the high idle last more than a couple of minutes then you might have an issue.

Sanben Zoom II will not idle

Hi, Anonymous you need to make sure you have no intake leaks by spraying some Brake Kleen, Contact Cleaner, Starting Fluid etc. around the intake manifold and seals, if the RPM's go up or down significantly then you have a leak that needs to be fixed before you can continue with the carburetor adjustment.
The engine should be at operating temperature with the choke off to set the idle between 950-1050 rpm. Turn the idle skrew clockwise to increase the idle speed and counterclockwise to decrease the idle speed. If you have access to your air-fuel mixture skrew you may turn it as well, if not there is a video below on how to gain access, make sure you start with clean or new spark plugs. Gently turn the air-fuel mixture skrew clockwise until it starts to bottom out "STOP" do not over tighten as it will damage the taper on the end, now back the skrew out 1-1/2 full turns to establish a starting point start the engine and check the idle rpm's and turn the idle skrew accordingly for 950-1050 rpm if necessary, turn the air-fuel mixture skrew 1/4 turn at a time and let the engine settle for about 10 seconds, turn the skrew clockwise for a leaner mixture and counterclockwise for a richer mixture, you are seeking the highest rpm your air-fuel mixture skrew can acquire without going past 3 full turns from bottom then resetting the idle skrew back down to 950-1050 rpm If you can not detect any rpm change and can not stall the engine by turning the air-fuel mixture skrew all the way in then your pilot/low-speed jet is too big and needs to be replaced with the next size smaller. Final adjustment should be made with a clean air filter mounted to the carburetor.

I have an 83 f-150 351w, in cold temps the truck won't idle till it warms up, then when it does it idles really fast, it also revs high, what can the problem be, also wen going at highway speeds after...

It sounds like it is working backwards. Around the time your truck was made the industry had different emissions standards for trucks and cars. There were less controls on trucks.

There were vacuum controls that would increase idle speed when the engine was cold. The way this was done is through a water temperature sensor that is commonly called a vacuum tree. It is called a tree because it is shaped like a tree trunk with a few branches and each branch has a vacuum hose. As water temperature increases the vacuum routing changes. The cold setting makes an idle step-up dash-pot raise RPM and close the choke plate. As the water warms, the internal parts of the vacuum tree move and change the vacuum ports.

When the ports change, RPM drops and the choke plate opens and low idle speeds are restored. With the choke plate open high speed operation of the motor is assured without bogging down.

I would say most of what can be wrong is cheap to fix. A new thermostat, perhaps a new vacuum tree. Your problem can also be the vacuum lines are not connected to the correct ports. One thing many people do is to adjust the idle speed at the wrong time. The step-up cams are not in the proper position and when stuff starts working everything is out of adjustment because the changes were made at the wrong time.

This is a job for an old school mechanic.

Engine high rev at stop and slowly goes to idle speed.

I've got Hyundai Lantra 1.6 year 2000. It's take time to start when it's hot. When I start my car it revs at about 2k-3k rpm. It also does it when I come to a stop. When I come to a stop it will stay at a higher rpm than that of idle speed. It drives ok when on freeway but uses more petrol. I have changed the water & petrol pump but no luck
