Question about Harley Davidson FLHRC Road King Classic Motorcycles

99 road king classic won't start. Makes loud clattering sound when start button is depressed. Put in new battery, cleaned all connections, installed new start relay and still the same problem. Getting 12.7 volts at the starter with the switch on but drops to 1 - 2v when start button is depressed. Also small wire at starter gets only about 2v when start button is depressed.

Since you installed a new battery and starter relay and cleaned all the connections, can't be but one thing left, the starter. Check the voltage at the battery. When you depress the start button, it shouldn't drop below 11 volts. If it drops to the 1-2 volts you mentioned, you've got a bad battery even if it is new.

If you're checking the voltage at the small green wire at the starter with it connected, you may be getting a bad reading. Unplug the wire and then check it. Should be 12 volts or better.

The starter is a Nippondenso starter. The starter motor is the "round part" on the bottom and the solenoid is the "pentagon shaped" part. When you depress the start button, the voltage pulls in the plunger in the solenoid. Once it's pulled in, the voltage holds it in. There is a coil inside the solenoid called "the hold in coil" that does just that. If it's not doing it's job, the plunger will be pulled in only to allow it spring back and then be pulled in again only to spring back and on and on. The plunger running very quickly in and out causes a loud clattering noise. It may be time for a new starter. They can check it out for you at your local shop.

There is a way to "Test" your starter motor. On the back of the starter there is a pentagon shaped plate that is held on by three small screws. Remove the plate and you will see the plunger of the solenoid. Make sure the bike is in neutral or you're in for a real shock. Take a large screwdriver and push the plunger inward until the contacts make. Your engine should turn over and it will start if the ignition switch is on. You don't need the switch on to do this test though. If the bike is in gear, it's going to lurch forward so make sure it's in neutral. This test will verify that everything else is good only the solenoid is bad. Problem is, you have to buy the starter complete unless you want to do the work to change everything out. I think you can order just the solenoid but you'll have to swap all the "guts" out the old starter into the new solenoid.

I use some spray wax on the inside of the hose. It makes it go on a little easier but they're still a pain to install.

You didn't describe the "click"

A series of rapid clicks means a low battery, or a bad (usually ground) connection, like if you crunched/abraded a wire along the lower frame when you drive over a curb.

A single, loud click indicates its a bad starter relay, about a $12 part:

Hi Choove, when checking for spark the CKP needs to measure the compression bump in order to send the correct signal to the ICM/ECM so always check for spark with either a third plug grounded or lift the end of the plug boot 1/2 " off one of spark plugs that are in the head. and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty
2. Fuel supply valve turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded with gasoline as a result of over use of enrichner.
5. Fuel valve or filter clogged.
6. Vacuum hose to automatic fuel supply valve disconnected, leaking, or pinched.
7. Discharged battery, loose or broken battery connections especially the negative cable at "BOTH" ends
8. Loose wire connection at coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
9. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, spark plug cable connections loose,
or cables connected to wrong cylinders.
10. Ignition timing incorrect due to faulty ignition coil, ignition module, or sensors " Manifold Absolute Pressure" "Camshaft Position Sensor" "Crank Position Sensor" "Brake Apply Sensor
11. Engine lubricant to heavy ( winter operation )
12. Sticking or damaged valves or push rod wrong length.
13. Primary cam sproket spline sheared or missing spacer.
14. Security alarm system not disarming.

2003 FLHRCI Start issue


Can you pin piont where the sound it moming from? Electrical or mechanical? If its in the motor take a long screwdriver and put it to the motor and put your ear up to the handle and you should be able to listen and move the screwdriver around and pin piont where in the motor this sound is comming from. This could be several things....how old is your battery? if it isn't holding a full charge it sometimes won't have the cranking amps to fully engage the starter. It could be the solenoid or the starter itself but I would start with the battery.

Is the tranny oil full? what kind of noise? Is there any grinding or other noises, or is it a whining sound? Does the clutch adjustment seem any differnt than it was prior to the noise? I would start with the throwout bearing, first.

2007 Road King Classic. When start switch depressed mothing happens, not even starter click. Battery good, no fuses blown, all electrical works except start


I'd guess either the "Run/Start" switch in in the "stop" position, (don't laugh, i've done it myself), you have a security system problem, or your starter relay is bad. The relay is a one cube looking device that acts a control circuitry for your starter. Usually they are under the seat but Harley has started moving things around so much lately that I can't keep up with them. It is going to be back near your starter somewhere. When you find it, turn the switch on and depress the start button. You should feel a noticable "click" if you are holding onto the relay. Now, look at the end of your starter from the right side of the bike. You'll see the end plate (pentagon shaped plate with three screws) with a small wire plugged into a connector at the top of the plate. Disconnect the wire and stick a test light or a volt meter into the wire side of the plug, not the starter side. Turn on the switch and press the start button. The test light should light up or the meter should show battery voltage. If it doesn't, you relay could be bad. Almost any auto parts store should have one.
