The only thing that will cause this whine is worn/defective bearings in the transmission, this allows the gears to mesh slightly out of line and this results in the noise and clunk

I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this, have repaired all my own bikes for 40 years and had quite a few, the only thing i have ever seen cause this is worn transmission gear shaft carrier bearings.

The offending clunk is a pretty general noise that could be related to several mechanisms with in the transmission.
They include:

  • A gear shift malfunction.
  • Damage to the shift drum.
  • Shift forks.
  • The selector mechanism.
  • Excessive wear or damage to the gear dogs.
Although it would be helpful to hear the clunk, it is virtually impossible to point to one of these as the cause of the clunk without disassembling and inspecting the transmission.
As for the whine, in all likely hood it is related to the other problem. Although it's source could be from a different component such as a bearing.
For example if the clunk was caused by excessive wear on the tranny components any metallic material from that wear would effect the bearings adversely.

Depending on your comfort level and mechanical skills removing the clutch assembly should allow transmission and gear selection parts to be cycled through their ranges of motion. This would allow you to see and problems that relate to those parts.

If you do not have a manual and need to see an exploded view of these parts you can check out www.partsfish.com. This site has links that will take you to exploded views of all the internals.

If you decide to tackle this problem on your own and need specific help with disassembling the transmission and what you need to look for once inside please let me know and I'll be happy to guide you through the process.

I hope this helps

One more thing:

There was an issue with the 02 VTX1800 that resulted in a recall. This involved a retainer clip in the tranny not seating properly and causing the rear wheel to lock up.
Although it's highly unlikely that this has anything to do with your trouble. A "It's better to be safe then sorry" attitude is always a good strategy and check for any recalls on your model and year.

This is normal on on a shaft drive bike.

You should pull the drive shaft and inspect or reset the front & rear lash.

My vtx 1800 die,s when I put it in gear

Is it when you put it in gear or when you relase the clutch?
If it is the clutch then you problem is in the kickstand switch, it is either malfunctioning, or out of adjustment.

Hope this is of some help.
