If you are working on your own bike a service manual is a good investment if you don't remember how the clutch is assembled.

My 89 yz 80 will start and sounds good, but when I pop it into 1st it goes a little bit then stops. So my question is why does my yz 80 start and not go?

Hi Brendan,
The YZ 80 (as you probly know) is a 2 stroke dirt bike which has a Mikuni carburetor (Yamaha part # 1LR-14101-00-00 )
- if it is the stock carburetor -
So there are are a few things to consider when troubleshooting this symptom.
Lets assume your bike is in descent working order. That is to say, your bike has good top end compression, and the power train (from the engine to the rear wheel) is working properly, the chain is properly lubed, wheels and bearings are aligned and free wheeling, the clutch is operable etc..
Anything that could cause unnecessary resistance to the engine and overload it when you release the clutch in 1st gear should be addressed first.
That said; what I believe could be your problem is a dirty carburetor. At Idle, your carberetor is giving your engine the necessary amout of fuel, but when you twist that throttle and pop the clutch, the engine needs more fuel which a dirty carb WILL NOT supply to the engine. If you left the bike to sit over the winter or the fuel had dirt in it, this could be the problem. You could probably use a carb cleaning and tuning. Open the carb up and look for signs of dirt or corrosion causing a blocked main jet, stuck floats and needle valve. Replace corroded parts and clean everything inside. The carburetor on this bike is very sensitive and even the smallest amount of debris will create performance issues. While you're in there, check your reed valves for cracking or bent or missing flaps. And make sure you clean you air filter and use new clean fuel. A fresh spark plug may be in order as well.

Hope this helps. Good luck and let me know how it goes! :)

Dave

Still pulls with clutch in

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Clutch controls improperly adjusted.
2. Oil level too high in primary chaincase.
3. Primary chain badly misaligned.
4. Clutch discs warped.
5. Insufficient clutch spring tension.

Cant get clutch to engage after fiting new cable help please

the clutch may be stuck on. Put the bike in neutral, start the bike, run down the road looking like a fool jumping on and off the bike to kick it into 2nd gear and pumping clutch lever. Clutch should be free.

It might also be worth checking if your pushrod has a ball bearing in the end, I had one on mine, replace the clutch plates and it wouldn't work with the ball bearing in :)

Why does my yz 80 1993 stall when im not moving and i put it in gear, (the bike has to be rolling to be pust in gear)

Your clutch is grabbing, adjust the cable so that it pulls harder on the clutch. If this does not help you may need to take the cluth out and inspect it for bad springs or damage

How to you properly adj a 2-stroke carb on a motorcross bike to keep from fouling the plug

Heat the bike up, give it a ride for at least 15-20 minutes. in idle, try adjusting the little black knob attached to your carburetor. This will adjust your air/fuel mixture. Adjust it little bits at a time, and then wait for a second before adjusting further (to allow the mixture to change). Pay attention the idle, and how the bike sounds. Adjusting that carburetor should help.
