Removing Rear Seats in a Mustang
Attempting to remove the rear seats in a mustang can initially seem like trying to solve a puzzle, as there are no obvious bolts or clips securing the seat in place. However, removing the rear seat assembly is actually a fairly simple task. The assembly actually consists of two pieces: the upper portion and the lower portion. Once the lower portion has been removed, the bolts which secure the upper portion in place can be accessed and removed, and the seat lifted away.
Removing the Bottom Portion of the SeatThe most challenging part of removing the back seat is removing the lower portion of the seat assembly, the lower portion meaning the part of the seat where the passenger sits on top of. The lower portion of the seat assembly sits in place, as opposed to being bolted to the Mustang. Underneath the front of the bottom portion of the seat are two metal bars, one bar located on either side of the assembly. These bars slide behind two metal pieces that have been welded into the floor of the Mustang. To remove the bottom portion of the assembly, it is necessary to detach the two metal bars from the two metal pieces on the floor. To do so, position yourself on the middle of the rear floor so that you are facing the back seat. Place one hand on in the middle of the left and right sides of the lower seat portion. Push the lower portion of the back seat towards the back of the Mustang while simultaneously pushing in an upward direction. This back and up motion will dislodge the lower seat portion from the floor of the Mustang. Once dislodged, simply pull the lower portion of the seat out of the vehicle.
Removing the Upper Portion of the SeatThe upper portion of the seat assembly, meaning the portion where the passenger's back rests against, is held in place with two 3/8-inch bolts. These two bolts secure the bottom of the upper seat assembly to the body of the Mustang, and are revealed once the lower portion of the seat assembly has been removed. These bolts must be removed with a wrench to free the bottom portion of the upper seat assembly. As for the upper portion, it is first necessary to remove the two plastic pieces which are used to cover the seam on the package tray. The package tray is located between the upper portion of the back seat assembly and the rear windshield. The two plastic pieces are located on either side of the upper portion of the back seat. These plastic pieces simply slide off of the seam of the package tray. With the plastic pieces removed, the upper portion of the back seat assembly can removed by lifting it straight up.
