Remove the right hand inspection hole from the engine cover turn the engine over with bolt in the hole and set the mark to no 1 tdc on remove the cam chain tensioner set the inlet cam with the inlet line mark flush to the head were the cam cover would sit then set the ex cam flush with the ex line and check that all three marks line up :inlet flush with the head the same with the ex cam and the crank mark lines up with engine case no 1 mark bolt down the cams in a criss cross pattern and torque to 12nm then back of the tensioner with a small flat head screwdriver you will have to hold it in the bolt it in and pull the driver out and you should hear it snap in place turn the engine over clock wise and recheck your marks to make sure you have it set wright.

Needing a timingbelt diagram 1997 Altima Nissan GXE L4-2.4L

  • It's a timing chain not a belt.

  • This diagram shows how to position the lower timing chain so that the mating marks line up.

  • Lower timing chain tensioner and timing chain guide positioning.

Double check the mating mark alignment of the upper timing chain and idler sprocket.

  • Make sure that the upper timing chain and camshaft sprocket mating marks align.

  • There are the diagrams you requested.
  • Hope this helps...

I have a 1993 jeep grand cherokee 4.0l and need a diagram for the timing chain links. i was told that there is to be 15 links between marks and then told 20. need help please.thanks

I don't have a diagram I can post, but once you install the new chain and have the two timing marks pointing toward each other, then turn the Crankshaft around twice and see if the two timing marks still line up. Remember, the crankshaft turns two times for every one time the camshaft turns.

I understand the 15 vs. 20, but that's neither here nor there. What the Factory Service Manual states is there should be 15 "pins" between the timing marks when the timing chain is set up properly. (?) The links you speak of aren't what you're's the pins in the chain. In other words, for each link of the Timing Chain, there are two pins, holding it in place...or a total of 48 pins on the length of the entire timing chain. Personally? When I install a timing chain, I rotate the crankshaft around twice to see if the timing marks still match up, and before putting everything back together, I start the Engine for a brief few seconds thereby knowing after reassembling everything, the Engine WILL Start.

If you're still concerned about the 15 pin thing, stop by your local Dealership and look in the Factory manual in Section 9 (Engine), Page 36 for a picture of the 15 so-called "chain-pins."

Hope this helps,

Timing chain diagram

Just wrap the chain around the gears and lineup the dots. dot to dot and put them on. That's how it goes. The timing itself is not adjustable. It's controlled by the engines computer. It's that simple.
