My car makes tapping noises when you start it goes a few blocks then stops running wait a while start it up and it does it again


Noise from the top or bottom. Top end doesn't usually kill the engine, but the bottom end noise will. Year make and model helps. If it is old and high miles. Time for another engine if it is worth it.

Have a 2000 xr100r did top end and new carb first time ever found oil was filling up with fuel so changed oil and now the engine is rattling?


The fuel in your fuel thins the oil to a point it no longer does its job of protecting the internal components of the engine.
If you have run the engine for an extended period of time the fuel washes the oil away and will damage these parts.
Is the rattle top or bottom end?
Easy way to pin point the noise is to use a long flat blade screw driver have the bike running and put the end (screw end) against the bottom of the engine then push the handle against your ear it magnifies the noise
And will allow you to pin point the noise area you can move the screw driver all over the engine and listen this way.
Im guessing it may be a big end bearing which will mean an engine rebuild.

Theres a knocking noise we thought it was the tension pulley replaced it replaced serpentine belt replaced alternator the knocking continues its coming from this area of the engine top part


noises are difficult to track but since your's is on top, try this-CAREFULLY use a wooden handle (from a broom, or paint roller extension) and place the end against items on top of the engine-the other end, your ear. Be aware of the moving pulleys and the belt, take your time-you can isolate the noise this way, and plan your next step.

Top End noice


Not a lot of information but I assume you're asking about some noise in the top end of your engine on your Heritage.

A Harley-Davidson engine is of an older design being that the valves are pushrod operated. It is not an overhead cam design like a lot of other bikes that try to look like Harleys. Harley has decided to stick with this design for as long as they can because it lends itself to what most Harley riders are looking for in their bikes, the traditional look lines and sound of the older motorcycles.

As such, there are a lot of components in the top end that must have some "running clearance" in order to operate. Push rods, rocker arms, rocker arm bushings, and such. A slight clatter or tapping noise in not uncommon. Now, it the noise if loud enough to make people turn their heads when you start the bike, you may have a problem. Usually a serious problem in the top end of the engine results in a poorly running engine as well.

You engine is equipped with hydraulic tappets. As the engine runs and things start to expand, the tappets are "pumped up" with oil to maintain a "zero clearance" in the valve train. If you have a tappet gone bad, it will make a loud erratic tapping noise that is sometimes accompanied by a bad running engine. You could have lost a roller on the end of a tappet as well. The Twin Cam engine was designed to help remedy the problem with the valve train geometry in the Evolution and earlier engines. It did straighten the pushrods up a bit but I still think it's possible to lose a tappet roller. If the noise is this loud, you will have to pull the tappet blocks and inspect the tappets to see if you have lost a roller.

Chatter tapping noise from left top end


observe if its having a white smoke when the engine heat up(specially when you hit on the gas) if it so have your piston ring change, hope it helps

The warer the engine cets the louder the top end


Hi I had the same problem when I purchased GTO, garage replaced engine however a few days later same noise returned, turns out garage had serviced car and used inferior oil, changed to Mobil 1 and have not had any noise since, had car 4 years now! Expensive mistake by dealer !!

hey i dont know if u already solved ur problem but i was having the same problem with mine so i went and bought this solution called risoline, compresion repair. when i changed my oil i poured that stuff in first and then the oil. with in a day it stoped the clicking/knocking noise. hope this helps
