Question about 1997 Yamaha XV 535 Virago DX

1 Answer

Bike cuts off when clutch is engaged on down shift.

Have a 97 Virago 535. Just spent $500 to "get it right". Road Saturday 30 some miles. Did fine. On the return trip, bike wouldn't take gas. Hesitated while running at speed. When clutch was engaged on down shifting, bike just cut off. Idle already adjusted.

Did you run out of gas? I know it sounds like a stupid question but I have seen it happen before. If your getting fuel to the carbs then I would have to say check the carbs floats. They may be sticking shut.

Starter engages while the motor is running

Hi, William the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. I shifted through my gears while idling with the clutch in. Then it stopped shifting at all. I have to rock the bike back and fort to let the shifter engage. Now eeven in neutral the drive is engaged. ...

I did this on my Vstar recently.

My solution was, engine off, ignition off. Hands off the clutch, Rock and downshift, rock and downshift a good half a dozen times to make absolutely sure you are in 1st gear. Now, still without touching the clutch, rock and VERY gently upshift. If you can push the bike back and forth without the clutch and the gears aren't engaging the engine, you're there. NOW turn on the ignition and pray for the green light.

Bike starts and idles but cuts off when put in gear

Hi there!
If bike is acting fine when in neutral, I would bet your problem is in your clutch cable, either it is broken of mis-adjusted. Please refer to the user manual and check the adjustment, because this should be easy to solve :)
Hope this helps!

Virago 535 gear change problem

The crunch is the slider gear dogs engaging into a gear. Slower revs will lessen the impact of engaging. Good clutch springs is the heavy clutch. Be glad.
