Have uchecked the pads are sitting properly and is itcable or hydrolic cable mght be bent

Change front brake pads, 2002 FXD


For 2002 DYNA to replace front brake pads FIRST remove the front master cylinder reservoir cap because as the pistons are pushed back into the caliper the fluid level may rise and you will need to see this and may have to remove some excess fluid, the3n loosen but do not remove both (12 pt/0.25 in.) pad pins, remove both 10 mm caliper mounting bolts, detach and remove the caliper from the front forks and brake disc, pry the pads back to force all four caliper pistons fully into their bores, with the pistons retracted, remove the pad pins and brake pads. The front left, front right (if present as not present on all motorcycles) and the rear brake calipers use the same exact brake pad set. On the right side of the vehicle, the pad with the two tabs installs on the inboard side of the caliper and on the left side the pad with the two tabs installs on the outboard side of the caliper. Install new brakepads into caliper with the curved portion of the pad facing the rear of the motorcycle, loosely install the pad pins until you hear an audible click, attach the caliper to the front fork, on models with dual front calipers check the alignment of the brake discs to the calipers. Loosen the axle pinch bolt nuts, tighten the axle nut to the proper torque, insert a 7/16 in. drill bit through the hole in the axle as far as it will go so that the contact point will have the edge of the drill bit touching the edge of the fork leg, place the caliper over the brake disc with the bleeder valve facing upwards, loosely install the long 12 pt/10 mm mounting bolt into the top hole on the fork leg, install the short 12 pt/10 mm mounting bolt into the bottom hole on the fork leg, tighten the bottom mounting bolt to 28-38 ft-lbs (38.51.5 Nm), final tighten the top mounting bolt to 28-38 ft-lbs (38.51.5 Nm), final tighten both pad pins to 180-200 in-lbs (20.3-22.6 Nm)., on models with dual front calipers, tighten the pinch bolt nuts while holding the slider against the 7/16 drill bit if necessary, remove the drill bit, pump the brake hand lever to move the pistons out until they contact both brake pads, verify the piston location against the pads and if the front wheel is off the ground, rotate it to check for excessive brake pad drag, check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder and fill it to the proper level if necessary using D.O.T. 5 SILICONE BRAKE FLUID, install the master cylinder reservoir cap and tighten its cap screws to 6-8 in-lbs (0.7-0.9 Nm), turn ignition switch ON pump the brake hand lever to verify operation of the brake lamp, test the brakes, test ride the motorcycle and if the brakes feel soft or spongy, bleed the system until you get a firm/hard brake lever and avoid making hard stops for the first 100 miles (160 km) to allow the new brake pads to become conditioned to the brake disc(s).

I have a 1983 sporster the front breaks handle is really really hard to pull it is a dule disk


Dual Disk Brake.
The problem is critical. I would not ride with this condition present. There are a couple of test I would do to determine where the problem lies. What I would be trying to determine with this test is to see if the problem is in the lever or the brake itself.... On the caliper down at the disc is a brass or stainless fitting there for bleeding the brakes. Fitting a wrench here tightly as to not damage the fitting, open the fitting. Now squeeze the brake lever. The handle should pull with almost no resistance. Fluid will squirt out. If the pull is very easy you have determined that the problem is not the handle itself and is in the caliper. A new caliper is the easiest solution however the original can be rebuilt. If the pull is still hard you need to determine if the problem is in the pivot of the lever or the internals of the master cylinder connected to the lever. I would now loosen the similar brass fitting at the Master cylinder(retighten the bleed screw at the caliper first). Lossen enough to allow fluid to leak by when you squeeze the lever. If the pull is difficult replace or rebuild the Master cylinder/lever assembly.

a good tips to replace your brake pads, clean the working area, clean the tyre and brake caliper with water to take out harmfull elements, safe you jack and stand jack. safe you vehicle on stationary position. and you can open the tyre. make sure you have original parts to maintenance good brake condition.

you should not need any special screws, a spanner or socket to remove the brake calliper. Then a large flat screwdriver, to prize open the gap between the old pads, as they are worn down and you will need to do this so the new ones fit in. The only one precaution to remember, is never suqeeze the front brake lever while you have the caliper off the bike, this could cause the caliper piston to fall right out. After you replace the pads, and put the calliper back on the bike, you will need to pump the brake lever a few times before the brakes feel right. you should not have to bleed the brakes after that job

How do i change thefront pads on my trident 900.96


Remove the caliper (brake) take note of the position of the anti-rattle spring, like a thin meatal plate on the edge of the brake pads. May be coverd with a plastic shield. Then remove the brake pin(s) they cross horizontally through the top edge of the brake pads, usually chrome or gold colour. The pads will then drop out,take note of any backing plates that may come out with the pads, as it is important that they go back right way up etc. While the pads are out inspect the brake pistons for rust,pump the brake lever once no more as the piston will come out,big nightmare !!.so be carefull. clean with soft brush ,then push back with soft metal or hard wood dont damage the rubber.The piston will resist so be patient . Once the pistons are home,smear the back of the new brake pads with copper grease match head size per pad,and reverse proses to re-fit. lock-tight caliper retaining bolts and torque to spec. PUMP BRAKE LEVER BEFORE RIDING OFF as pads will not touch disc first go.give final inspection try brakes while standing next to bike ,then gently bed them in for next 100 miles or they will glase over.

Remove tyres. Remove brake pads.
Remove Brake calipers bolts from the back of calipers.
Put calipers aside without removing brake lines. Remove rotor bolts. Remove rotors. Install new rotors Make sure new rotors are clean from any grease that comes on it with petrol or any cleaning chemical for that purpose (no water) Install calipers Install new brake pads Good luck

Hi Jasa

Unless you are mechanically competent, I would not advise you carry out this procedure yourself, but leave it to the professionals.

If you are mechanically minded, and competent, the pads are relatively easy to replace, as follows.

Jack up the vehicle and put on stands, if you don´t have access to a hoist?

Remove wheels, and open the hood, put some kitchen roll around the brake fluid reservoir, to catch any excess brake fluid, when you push back the brake caliper pistons, if it´s been overfilled.
On the front brake caliper's, you are best to put in a little lever between pads and disc, and ease back the piston to fully retracted, unless you have a small G clamp which will do the same job when caliper is adrift.

Remove the 2 x 13mm caliper securing bolts and swing off the caliper, and support with a piece of wire, don´t just let it dangle on the brake hose.
Remove the brake pads, and sensor wire, check the caliper piston dust cover for splits, and clean caliper, housing, etc, and disc, with brake cleaner.

Fit the new brake pads to the caliper, and refit with 2 new securing bolts with blue lock tite, (normally supplied with the B/Pads.)

The rear caliper´s are pretty much the same as the front, although you can just undo the top bolt and swing the caliper back, but I usually remove both, for ease of cleaning, and inspection.

After rear caliper´s and pads and sensor wire, and new bolts are fitted, pump the brake pedal with the ignition on, and just run around, and check there are no leaks from the caliper pistons.
Check the fluid level, and lower with suction syringe if necessary.

By the way, 1. When did you last change your brake fluid ?
2. Adjust your front wheel bearings end float ?

You could do this now before you fit the wheels.?

FRONT BRAKE SHUDDER WHEN BRAKING HARD


try chaining fork oil.
check your forks for play.
check your pads for uneven wear.
also make sure the stearing head bearings are ok.
hope somethig helps.
could also be caused by the unevenly worn front tyre.
