Question about 1999 Yamaha V Star 1100 Custom

V Star 1100 - after cruise speeds engine rpm very slow to retun to idle after letting off throttle.

Check to be sure the cables are not binding.
LUBE those cables!

You can buy a device that is simple and not expensive to lube the cables.
My V Star-1100 custom did exactly the same thing after about 4 years.
Seems the standard service package does not include lubing the cables!

After a generous lube the throttle cables and sticking slow return vanished.
Pleasant surprise how easy the throttle and clutch cables worked too!

1. Throttle cables improperly adjusted, pinched or need lubrication.
2. Idle adjusting screw needs to be backed off.
4. Air fuel mixture adjusted too lean start with 2 full turns.
5. Intake system air leak.
6. Fast idle choke ramp is not releasing.
7. Broken throttle return spring.

2001 Yamaha XVS 650 Dragstar carburetor adjustments


Hi, Samtburke the carburetor throttle shaft wheel has two cables the cable closest to the right side of the bike is the throttle cable and the one closest to the left side is the idle cable. Right about the middle between the two is the idle adjustment bolt it faces out towards the air filter end of the carb. The engine should be at operating temperature with the enrichener off to set the idle between 950-1050 rpm. Turn the idle adjustment bolt clockwise to increases idle speed and counterclockwise to decrease idle speed. If you have access to your air fuel mixture bolt you may adjust it as well if not there is a video below on how to gain access, make sure you start with clean or new spark plugs. Gently turn the air fuel mixture bolt clockwise until it starts to bottom out "STOP" do not over tighten as it will damage the taper on the end, now back it out 2 full turns to establish a starting point start the engine and check the idle rpm's and adjust the idle adjustment bolt accordingly for 950-1050 rpm if necessary, adjust the air fuel mixture bolt 1/4 turn at a time and let the engine settle for about 10 seconds, clockwise for a leaner mixture and counterclockwise for a richer mixture you are seeking the highest rpm your air fuel mixture bolt can acquire without going past 3 full turns from bottom then readjusting the idle adjustment bolt back down to 950-1050 rpm If you can not detect any rpm change and can not stall the engine by turning the air-fuel mixture bolt all the way in then your pilot/low-speed jet is too big. Final adjustment should be made with a clean air filter mounted to the carburetor. Adjusting idle knob


Hi, Michael it should be noted I am not allowed to use the word "SCR*W" as Fixya considers it profane. The carburetor throttle shaft wheel has two cables the cable closest to the right side of the bike is the throttle cable and the one closest to the left side is the idle cable. Right about the middle between the two is the idle adjustment bolt. It faces out towards the air filter end of the carb . The engine should be at operating temperature with the enrichener off to set the idle between 950-1050 rpm. Turn the bolt clockwise to increases idle speed and counterclockwise to decrease idle speed. If you have access to your air fuel mixture bolt you may adjust it as well if not there is a video below on how to gain access, make sure you start with clean or new spark plugs. V Star 1100 Classic will not return to idle at a stop without shifting into neutral

How do I set the Idle mixture adjustment on my 2002 Yamaha V Star Classic. Is there an initial setting to get the engine to start.

2005 V-Star 1100 flooded condition. Changed plugs...same result. Removed and cleaned carbs and set the floats a few times. Each time the bike stareted and ran mint at lower engine RPM. The problem is it...


Hi, Anonymous the following applies to carbureted also fuel injected models and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Failed ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Air/fuel mixture screw improperly adjusted.
10. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
11. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
12. Fuel tank empty.
13. The gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
14. A failed fuel pump, pressure regulator and or fuel injectors.
15. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
16. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.

2000 mercury villager, runs a fast idle. whether cold or warm the idle remains at a high idle speed, it even pulls with the brake applied.


Could be a vac leak, or a dirty throttle body, or a faulty idle air control valve. The computer controls idle speed by regulating the amount of air into the intake. Could also be something pulling on the throttle cable such as the cruise control.

My vstar 1100 doesn't throttle down while shifting gears so I am power shifiting. Also while coasting to a stop the idle stays high till I bog it down with first gear. Is this the throttle position sensor?...
