Question about 2001 kawasaki VN 1500 Vulcan Classic Tourer - Fi

2 Answers

2001 nomad, has power commander, vance and hinse exhaust and hyper charger. Bike starts but miss fires. Bike seems to run better uphill then down hill. It started on day on a ride when the bike just died at a stop light. Started easy again with a touch of the starter button. Miles later it would not idle. Misfired, rolling the throttle back and forth rappidly would be the only way I could keep the bike running. Thought I had bad gas. I put some HEET(water remover/injecter cleaner) in the tank and ran the freeway about 30 miles and the bike settled down. Actualy run great for 150 mile trip. Starting and stopping ok. Sat for an hour for lunch and bike started and ran fine back to the hotel. Next day I started the bike and for the first two blocks if ran fine then started its misfireing again.Got on the freeway and at 75mph it would only misfire ocationally(hope spelling is not a concern). Stopped for lunch and the bike sat for an hour and ran rough until I was on the freeway again. Seemed like down hill when I had to back the throttle down thats when the missfiring was the greatest. Checked the spark plugs and they where dry and clean. The last couple hundred miles home I could feel this surging in the engine. Very slightly but I did notice it. I thought it was fuel problem but now I not sure. If you have any Ideas please let me know. Thank you Mark

DRAIN CARBS FROM PETCOCK AT BOTTOM OF EACH CARB MAKE SURE FUEL DRAINS COMPLETELY THEN TURN FUEL BACK ON, IF THIS IS AN INJECTED MODEL DRAIN TANK AND FLUSH THEN RUN IT HARD FOR 20 MILES OR SO, MAKE SURE YOUR OIL LEVEL IS OK

Why is my motorcycle running so hot

Generally, pipes turning blue from too much heat will be caused by improper fuel/air mixture or timing. If the bike exhibited no problems before changing the pipes, my guess would be that you need to readjust your carburetor. This would not be an uncommon step necessary when changing pipes. Might as well check your timing at the same time though.

Back fire with vance hines pipes

Sounds like it is running lean. The ECM must be remapped for a performance breather and/or free flowing pipes. I would use H-D Super Tuner or have a dealer do a digital download to remap the ECM properly for the changes you have obviously made. You may do great harm to your engine if you run it without the mapping change as the VE will be changed and the ECM doe not know what is physically going on with VE if it is not mapped into the ECM

2001 Honda VT 1100 C2 Shadow Sabre Running Lean

I have a 2007 Honda Shadow Sabre VT1100 and I also put after market pipes on it from Vance and Hines. I also have to keep it choked when first starting and sometimes even hold the throttle a bit while it warms up. The bike has two carburetors and the best solution I have found by lots of asking around of mechanics and bike folk is to get it rejetted through Dyno Jet. It is meant for bikes with after market exhausts and much less back pressure from the lack of those stiffling baffles in the stock pipes. I have also noticed the power loss in the middle torque range and backfiring because of the bike running in a lean condition. The Dyno Jet website is a good place to find the correct set and corresponding part number, but then I suggest finding a cheap place online so you avoid retail price :) Hope this helps. Oh, and don't forget to buy two kits...we have two carburators in our bikes.

2011 Nomad 1700 lacks power in 6th gear especially in heavy wind or in mountains. Always shifting down to 5th to keep up. Only 33 mpg doing 70 mph. Improves to 39 MPG at 55. I had a 2003 1600 Classic...

nomads are heavy bikes mate and i feel all is as should be with yours, top gear is usually for on the straight and cruising, at a constant speed. my vtx 1800 does similar albeit only 5 speed i still have to pull down a cog and work the gears on hills. the mpg doesnt sound a miss for the nomad either. my vtx does similar.

Low rpm loss of power with aftermarket vance and hines pipes

If you have carburetors you need to install a jet kit. If you have a fuel injected bike you need to add a Power Commander and program it for the changes you have made to the intake side of the engine. Make sure you installed all new exhaust gaskets or you will have lots of popping and back firing.

I have a 2003 vtx 1800s with hyper charger and custom exhaust dont know what kind bought it this way.The bike keeps fowling sparkplugs every 4 to6 hundred miles what is wrong with bike

You have a fuel injected motorcycle. It is made to work with a stock intake and exhaust. When you alter the stock system it does not know how to compensate for some of the conditions that will come up. Most people buy a Power Commander and program it to compensate for the changes that the stock system will not compensate for. If you already have a Power Commander then you should hook it back up the computer and reprogram it or look on line to see if there is a better map available for the changes on your bike. If you do not have a Commander get, get one. If you already have one, get your program disc and cables and re-map it or take your cycle to someone who can.

94 yamaha xj 600 wont rev over 6000 rpm

You bike is running rich on the main jet. Go down on the main jet size. Alternate to that, move the jet needle clip up one notch.

Go to the site below and you can download a free PDF service manual and parts manual for your bike. The service manual is 45th from the bottom of the Yamaha listings and the parts manual is 19th from the top. Now you can tune the carb and adjust the timing chain slack and a whole lot more. It saves my keystroke finger a lot of work also.

Please rate this solution. Thanks glouellette!
