Question about 1981 Honda GL 1100 Gold Wing

Forks won't hold air pressure. What is the likely issue? Do I have to go for a complete rebuild or is there a likely suspect I could pinpoint? suggestions? thanks and best regard, Glen from California

Blown seals or worn no easy fix except to remove and replace bad seals

Check for air leaks, a spray bottle of soapy water works well. Pressurize the forks and spray around anywhere air might leak, including the fork seals. If you see bubbles, you found your problem, Frank

2001 Honda CR 80 hard to shift


Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Clutch not adjusted properly.
2. Primary chaincase overfilled with lubricant.
3. Corners wore off shifter clutch dogs.
4. Shifter return spring bent or broken.
5. Bent shifter rod.
6. A loose shift lever on shifter shaft.
7. Shifter forks sprung.
8. Shifter pawl needs adjusting.
9. Heel/toe shifter coming in contact with the floorboard.
10. Transmission oil too heavy.

Front forks on 1996 honda shadow are very soft


Hi, Anonymous if your front forks are stiff or soft or not performing as required the usual suspects are:
1. Incorrect fork oil capacity.
2. Incorrect fork oil weight.
3. Incorrect air pressure.
4. Fork springs are worn out.
5. Fork springs installed upside down.
6. Fork springs are the wrong length.
7. Fork springs not designed for year and model.
8. Slider spring missing from fork assembly.
9. Slider spring installed incorrectly.
10. Incorrect fork seals or bushings facilitating stiction.

I'm having problems with my 1987 Honda Aspencade front forks taking the bumps very hard. Is this a matter of adding fork oil? I cannot find any info on this or how to add the oil or troubleshoot this...


Do not add oil too your forks. Too much oil will jam the forks up, damaging the fork tube chrome and the fork bushings. If you suspect incorrect oil levels in the tubes, drain the tubes and refill them with the correct amount of oil. If there is too much pressure in the system, then loosen an air tube and bleed off the excess pressure. You may have a defective air pressure valve or pump. Parts that may or may not be available from the local dealer any more. More information can be found at ngwclub.com or Randaaks.com. Do not over fill your forks with oil. Let the air pressure out of your forks.Use the compressor on the GL1200 to reduce or add air pressure to the forks. The controls for the compressor are located on the dash. Turn the key the "On" position to use the compressor

I need to know how much air to put in the front forks


Not sure what bike you have, I'm guessing it's an 80's bike if it's got air forks. Usually the air pressure is in the 5->10 psi range, you don't need much. Really try to avoid putting too much pressure in them. As well as making your suspension too stiff, it increases the chances of blowing a fork seal. Also higher the pressure inside your forks will increase the friction of your seals. Not a lot, but every little bit matters when it comes to forks.

This is a pretty simple explanation and I'm assuming the oil level in your forks is already correct. If it isn't then you will be able to make it a bit better with air but it will never be quite right.

I have a early 1980's honda 750 need to know how much air pressure the fork's hold, or need to put in them.


You do not have to put any air in the forks. There was a sticker telling you maximum pressure on the bike. It may still be there. Maximum pressure is not more than 14 pounds. You will never need more than 7 or 8 pounds. First set the rear shocks for a hard or soft ride. Then holding a bicycle foot pump with a pressure gauge on it in your hands , give it one pump (do not go over 10 or 12 pounds pressure). Now bounce on the seat and bleed pressure out of the forks until the front and rear shocks drop at the same time. Your bike suspension is now set up correctly for riding.

It sounds like you have very low air pressure or volume of air. Try increasing the compressor air pressure. If you have an in line filter check that..

Think i need fluid in forks of my balius H reg. 1987 i think!


I am not familiar with the Kawasaki Balius model, but nearly all front motorcycle forks have two small hex head fill plugs at the top of the forks. The fluid is usually a very pure mineral oil of some sort, but use only the fluid recommended in the owners manual. You can add fluid using a squeeze bottle or a large syringe, just make sure everything is spotlessly clean. If you continue to loose fluid, you will need to rebuild the forks. The job is fairly straightforward IF you can locate a rebuild kit. Once again, make sure everything is spotless or you will be doing it again soon.
